Default Fuel level sender

On my 82 I have a new fuel level sensor but incorrect readings on the fuel gage. Ignition on-reading is full. Ignition off-reading is empty. I noted that on the wiring to the sending unit there is no voltage reading on any of the wires. I realize the brown is ground but the other 2 wires show zero voltage. Souldn't on of the wires show voltage?

Yes, should do. There is a connector in the corner of the spare wheel well, maybe has a cover - look for a 3 wire coupling. these get poor contacts - open, clean the pins/sockets and reconnect - try again. You could check the incoming lead for volts (ign on) to ensure its reached that far. Two pins on the tank unit should read close to zero ohms at one extreme of contents, around 70-80 ohms at the other extreme, just forget which end. The third pin is for the low fuel warning.

I was under the impression the wires in the spare wheel well were for the reverse lights and speedo sensor.

You are correct, I was mistooken. There ought then to be volts on one of the incoming wires, or there is a fuse or wiring problem...Somebody will know if an incorrect full reading means an open circuit, or a short....I for dont recall that bit.
