Goodyear or Avon
Has anyone run Avon ZZ3's on the rear? I have 255/40/17 rims and have a reasonable choice. however the last Toyo's only lasted 6000 miles (6 months) and the Dunlop SP's were even worse.
I can still obtain Goodyear F1 GSD 3's over here but have not tried them before. The Avons are a little cheaper and seem to have a reasonable tread pattern although the Bridgestones are closer to the Toyo's (which are brilliant in the wet)
I cant seem to find any reviews on the Avons here. Suggestions would be welcome.

Hi,
I am currently running the goodyears on my S4. They seem to be quieter and more comfortable than the dunlops they replaced. Traction seems good both wet and dry. Wear is normal for this type of tyre.
I have 5000km+ on them.
Avon's are unobtanium in (my part of) NZ so can't comment on those.

I have a set of GSD3s on my '89 911. They handle fairly well (wet and dry), are very smooth and quiet. I've only driven them 12K in 7 years, so they still look new, but are probably approaching replacement due to age.
Big problem I had was not being able to balance the fronts. I even had them replaced under warranty after less than 1K miles. The replacements still give me some wheel shake at ~70+mph, and I know the wheels are fine. Not a big deal stateside, but when I lived in Stuttgart, it was a real annoyance.
I also had a set of Goodyears on my truck that went bad (tread separation) at 30K, and they were 50K rated tires. So I'm not much of a Goodyear fan and don't recommend them to anyone who asks. There are many other better and cheaper tires out there, IMHO.
I had Avon M500s on my old VW Corrado. Only negative I saw was that the tires themselves were very heavy.

ah! thanks people. If 6k is about normal considering the amount of motorway(freeway) driving I do then I will probably go back to the Toyo's. (especially as it seems to be constantly raining lately)
Wheel judder at 70mph would be a real PIA. That is the speed limit here and pretty much everyone drives between 70 and 80 on the motorways.
