Default Temp gauge/Temp sensor

Hi,

My temperature gauge needle sometimes jumps, up or down, just a little, and i believe it may be a bad contact in the instrument cluster. Anyway, for most of the time it's very accurate.
Disassemble and cleaning all contacts in the instrument cluster is on my “to do” list, but I'll wait for the Summer.
In the meantime, I would like to know if the replacement of the temperature sensor in the engine is a straight forward job, as disconnect wires, remove old sensor, put new one and reconnect wires or is there something more involved.
Although it may not solve my gauge problem I guess it won't do any harm replacing a 30 year old sensor.
Also please confirm me if 928 606 201 01 is the correct part number for my car.

Thanks in advanced.

Regards

Please post back whenever you get this issue resolved. I have a Spring project planned to replace the odometer gear and my temp guage does this sometimes too. Was planning on doing the standard cleaning of terminals, checking all the connections, etc., but I'd like to know if you end up seeing a specific cause.

Hi,

I've just ordered the temperature sensor and I'll have it in about 4/5 days. I probably don’t do it next weekend, maybe the other.
I think my temperature gauge is very accurate; it has the "normal" behaviour in accordance with the driving situations and the temperature outside, never in any occasion pass above the last white line.
What annoy me are those little jumps that the needle gives, sometimes with no apparent reason, other times together with the blinker or the switch on of any electrical part, lights, defroster, etc.
I’m almost 100% sure that it’s the connections in the instrument cluster that need a good cleaning, but before disassembling I’ll replace the sensor in the engine, just in case….
And of course replacing a sensor with 30 years old with a new one won’t do any harm surely!

Regards

That sounds exactly like the behavior mine has. When I get around to changing the odo gear I'll see if I can find any possible causes as well.

Hi,

Just reporting back, the change of the temperature sensor had no effect on the "jumping" behaviour of the gauge (as I espected), so it's definitely a dash contact problem. Removing and cleaning the dash contacts and replace bulbs is on the list of things to do ( for a very long time....).
At least I known I have a new and 100% working temperature sensor!!!

Regards
