Default Looking to trade my test pipe for a CAT

The PO of my car removed the cat and had a test pipe installed in it's place. I would like to get my car emissions compliant as I have been considering putting it up for sale. The area that I live does not require emissions testing but areas near to me do require it. The test pipe has been welded in place and is one continious piece from the exhaust manifolds to the input flange of the first muffler. I can post some pics if anyone is interested. This is for a U.S. 84' car. The pipe has the O2 sensor bung welded in as well.

This is just a thought, why not take your car to a muffler shop, have them flange the test pipe and flange an aftermarket cat. You can swap the cat in and out on smog days. I assume you still have the factory exhaust setup, which is a y-pipe going to a single pipe all the way back?

I had considered an aftermarket cat and may still go that route if no one has an OEM unit available. I wasn't sure if CA would pass a vehicle with aftermarket CATS installed.

Officially they won't, but a lot depends on who is doing the inspection. My smog guy: "Changed anything since last time?" Sniffs the tail pipe and away I go.
