can you manually raise the windows?

No. Sounds like the switch needs to be replaced. Not a hard job - remove the passenger side side panel - 2 screws in the carpet, one by the seat. You'll see the harness, and you'll need to loosen the screws for the consol at the rear too, to lift it up a bit. Take notes on the wire color arrangement in the plastic harness - you'll have to pull the old aswitch out and put the new one in the harness. It's a fairly straightforward plug and play.

To get you by until you get a new switch....pop the top off with the ignition off. Pull the rockers out and clean all the contacts. Reassemble. 99% chance it will work. As the switches get old they get carboned up.
Not sure about an 87 switch, but this certainly works for anything up through 84.

That should work.
Theoretically, you can bypass the switch in an emergency to raise the window.
You need a wire with 12V on it. Disconnect the 18pin connector at the door. Terminal 1 and terminal 2 as-labled at that connector are the wires that are associated with window up and window down (you have to experiment to see which is which of course). Touching either terminal with 12V will power the window. Jadz928 and I did that on an 87 once.
Edit: I just checked, they don't label the terminals on this connector. Look for a green wire, also a green wire with a red stripe. That's terminals 2 & 1, respectively.

Careful if it is actually the switch or the bevel housing in the console it's mounted in. Mine cracked and instead of actually switching it just pushes the switch down into the console. Nothin outwardly looks different though.

"Manually" no but you can be your own switch and raise it.
Pop the side off the console and look for the connectors. The switches have long cables from them and will connect to another cable toward the back of the console, under the dash. Disconnect the cable and use a piece of wire to short the connections on the short end. Yes, you've got a 50% chance of disconnecting the wrong window.

cronin, on my 88 i unhooked the pass side switch and hooked it up to drives side to get my window up and until I could get another switch in the mail. New switch is under $30 from Roger.
Not sure if 87 and 88 are the same? Drives side is red plug near fire wall on drivers side, and green on the pass side I think. Yellow is for sunroof. I may have those switched? I had to pull both kick panels to make the switch. Took 20 min.
