Default Barret Jackson Auction - I was disappointed

I watched the whole Auction to see the 1980 928 up for auction. Just curious to see what they would say about the car. The car was not televised. Ford after Ford and Chevy after Chevy and everything in between but no 928. I was bummed. Never again will I do that.

Lot 479.2 Wednesday http://www.barrett-jackson.com/

I did see some pretty cool cars though. 928 went for 15,000 + commission. I am such a newby.

Mark

Did it say how many miles it has on it? The car looks GORGEOUS in the pics! Of course little pics like that can hide pretty much anything. Sounds like it has been well kept (same mechanic since '85!) and sure looks well kept. There were no wavys in the front bumper cover that I could see in the pic anyway.

Love the 17" wheels part...IDIOTS! Unless it was sold with wheels other than those pictured on the car! That would have been a GREAT car for the Morrison collection! All the keys were present...and then some! Seats and carpet looked great too! Really well presented car (in the pics anyway). NO surprise at all that it was not shown on TV!

I was watching to see if they mentioned the mileage. Didn't say in the text on the ad. Sure was a nice looking example. Nice!

I like that you can go to the link you posted, type 928, and see 25 that were auctioned during the last 10 years or so.

I wonder how many stock production cars sell on BJ that have the "speed/power/fuel miliage combo" that a 928, 968 or 951 have? I would say very few. They have to make room for that $80,000 "68" Camaro that gets 11mpg and scares the hell out of you at 135mph.

Coverage at Mecum seems to be similar. Not too long ago there was a 911 on deck, and just as it was about to come up they broke for commercial. By the time they returned, the 911 was gone and the Chevy behind it was all the focus.

At the risk of making an overgeneralization about the state of the American collector car market, if the demographic that actually attends Barrett-Jackson and Mecum auctions is similar to the demographic watching on TV, then it should be no surprise that the TV coverage is tailored to the musclecar crowd. I would never sell a 928 at B-J (though 15K seems like a pretty decent sale for that nice '80..)

I would love to go and browse a couple hours in the tents and enjoy the weather; we're getting more snow and teens tonight. But I don't think I would last very long at the auction, just boring, boring, boring. How many Mustangs, Chevelles, Super Bees, Dusters, etc. are there? Year after year, after year.

Caught a black and tan 94 GTS (Auto) on either Mecum or Barrett (can't remember)..and it sold for around $30 K. The announcers gave it glowing praise, but mentioned that it was the fastest production car in the 80's (I was expecting a reference to 86/87 Holbert 172mph)...and they said top speed of 145.??? Maybe for 83 or 84..LOL...

Wish they'd collect the euro and exotic coverage together somewhere and broadcast it. I too tire of the semicustom iron that rolls across the stage for crazy money. Of course I pretty much got tired of speedvision when they took the vision out of it.

And those mecum guys just grate on my nerves, I find the whole circus there offensive.

Guess I'm not a targeted demographic.

I too was watching the auction parade of Chevy's etc until a 69 Chevelle came across the block and one of the guys called it a "supercar". The use of that term for that car was the final straw for me and I switched it off and went out to tidy up the garage. I am old enough to remember when those cars were new and clearly remember the build quality...

100% in agreement. Their intended audience seems to be 14 year old boys who have tired of watching WWF 24x7. They seem to think people really are there to watch their very tired tatics and games and shouting. And personally speaking I would rather watch the auction of a rare and correct '48 Packard than see the 345th Camero or Mustang cross the block with a 600hp all billet aluminum engine with 24" wheels selling for $125k. I must be well outside their targeted demographics too.....

Chasing Classic Cars has shown auto auction action at Sothby's, Christies, Bonhams and a couple of other high end auction houses...pleasing to watch, even in French, on ocassion.....

Went last night - and pretty much every car I saw on the block seemed to be a custom. I didnt park my *** in a chair as we were walking around for most of the night. Heading back this weekend during the daytime to check the cars that are on the lower grass level.

Ill post some of my pictures, that I currently have, later on tonight.
