A few years ago, we had a friend in Argentina, Manuel Tanoira. I haven't heard from him lately...

Here was his response to a "what do you do" thread.

Subject: What do you do for a living

I am now 69. Started engineering school in 1953 in Argentina and was expelled for being anti-Peron. Got a pilot's license and started air taxi. After Peron was toppled I went back to the university. I got my first "sports car", a custom made Cisitalia with an aluminum open body, MG gearbox and a V8 Ford 60HP engine with Edelbrook cams and heads. We fitted floats (no wheels) to a Cessna 180 and flew 1.000 miles nonstop to a lake in Bariloche. Seven hours with auxiliary tanks.
In 1959 went to California (in a cargo plane caring for six horses) where I got my engineering degree (San Francisco City College and San Jose State). In 1961 I spent my summer vacation riding a Triumph motorcycle down to Argentina. In 1963 went to work as an engineer for Ford at their Milpitas, California plant. I moved later to Holland, Michigan where I was made head of the Industrial Engineering Dept. at a plant where 80% of the rear view mirrors for the U.S. cars were made. In 1965 came back to Argentina. I was named manager of a plastic flooring plant which was going bankrupt. I turned it around and was made Industrial Director of the 9 plants that the company had. I then moved to Swift and Co. where I managed 150 industrial engineers at their meat packing plants. The local operation of the company folded and I moved as Industrial Director for a hardboard manufacturer. Then General Manager for a newsprint manufacturer.
In 1974 I went on my own as a consultant, specializing in turning around ailing companies. I later bought my own nylon yarn manufacturing company which I recently sold.
I bought my first Porsche in 1965, a 356, then two more in Michigan. I brought back to Argentina a 1961 356. Then a Super 90 here. I then imported a 924 brand new from Germany in 1980. I always lusted after a 928. I finally bought my first, a 1986 auto, 5 years ago and a year later my present '88 S4 5 sp bl/bl. I raced the 356 in clubs in Michigan and later in Argentina a Lotus 7 which gave me the national championship in 1995.
I entered the government as a minister in charge of privatizations so I had to give up races. Later I bought a Cobra replica with a Ford 305 engine which I also raced (little success). As a sort of pioneer in privatization I was invited to give conferences around the world on the subject. I was interviewed by Time and Newsweek and wrote 4 articles with my signature for the Wall St. Journal. Anyone interested can find them through Google.
I always rode motorcycles, I have owned 4 BMW's, the last of which is presently my daily ride. I was raised in a local ranch and played polo most of my life (meager 4 goals of handicap). I moved to amphibian planes (I owned a Lake Buccaneer) and later helicopters which I keep flying today.
The 928 is the best car I ever had. It eats up the 911 at the local tracks.
I have a hobby mechanic shop (lathe. MIG welding, etc) but I refrain myself from working on the 928. Too complicated for me.

Scary place to ride in a car.

Where we might have a 4 way stop, they have 4 way go's.

Mar Del Plata on a business trip to evaluate a local supplier of glycerin in 2004, riding in a mini van with my team near coastal residental areas. Scared ****less. There weren't any stopsigns and the driver brandished the minivan like a weapon.

Buenos Aires, more refined, as we taxied through the city for a whole day going from semi-residential factory to factory in search of great leathergoods. At one place, to buy coats, we had to walk to a nearby gas station to use their credit card machine. Johnny Tourist, that day, living on the edge, hoping against all hope to make it back to the hotel with a gift for my wife and both my kidneys.

Love Argentina, though, didn't see enough of it. Great people. Wonderful hosts. But lots of security concerns I guess?

Thanks, Wally, for posting that. Manuel really got around. Interesting guy..interesting life.

I lived in Argentina for 3 years. Porsches were pretty scarce outside of BA.

" Manuel really got around. Interesting guy..interesting life."

Manuel is still active at 75. He sold his 928 two years ago.
