Default GTS oil pump is it different?

GTS oil pump is it different?

As part of my GTS TBW project I pulled the oil pump in order to replace the o-ring, bolt seals and shaft seal.

There was no evidence around the pump housing and shaft of any leaking after it came out I compared it with another pump I have on hand and I noticed the O-ring is positioned in a different location.

I checked with PET and found that all the part number for all model years are the same – 928.107.008.02

The pump from the GTS is marked 928.107.120.1R and the other one is 928.107.120.0R

The car has the steel oil gear and there is no support washer 928.107.166.00 behind the gear.

So back in she goes

prior to fitting this pump fill the gears with STP oil treatment and circulate the gears so they are all coated then fit it.
This will guarantee that you get oil pressure when the pump starts turning.
Put in the pump,
install the belt,
start the engine.
Note with the steel gear the 1mm washer is deleted so you should be good to go

NOTE if you have any, use some Dow corning 111 sealant on the O rings
and STP to lube the radial seal ,
make sure the radial seal stays in the correct position ,
sometimes an edge can flip when you insert the drive gear

sure looks like there may have been some cost cutting going on with the 1R pump, it does not look as robust as the early one but it has to be cheaper to cut that o-ring step than a o-ring groove.

of course it could be far better, I would think looks would not matter here.

I ran my pump with a drill before putting the belt on. I got oil pressure up to the cams that way. A swivel and an extension gets the drill below the car. I think it's an easy way of assuring oil is where you want it before starting the engine.

Porsche went to a larger oil pump around 1982 to improve idle oil pressure....

where did you get the other pump, I think its a pre 32 valve oil pump. I swapped out a GTS pump with a 87 S4 once and they were the same with the 1R number.

During installation make sure the dot on the outer gear is facing outward, like the dot on the middle gear/shaft.

I did the same and it worked well. Just make sure your oil cooler lines are hooked up before you try it.
