hello all,my 84 automatic has always shifted through the gears too quickly and now I know why.My thinking was to adjust the cable to try to correct this but when I disconnected the cable.there was a bunch of slack in it. My question is how difficult is this cable to change? Any help would be greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance

Its doable.
For me, the hardest part was unbolting the bracket at the top drivers side of the bell housing that holds the cable.
The fastener is pretty difficult to access. And can require huge torque to break free.
The exhaust comes down and the bands are removed that clamp the cable and vac pipe to the top of the TT.
The cross brace near for the TT is removed.
I'm pretty sure the whole metal housing for the cable will come out.
I have one in the basement from an 84 if you need pictures (cable + tube)
The other trick is dropping the trans pan to attach the cable end.
Hard or not, you need to figure out how to do it. You will love how it shifts.

It may be the connector is pulled off the end of the cable, more likely than the cable itself having broken... you have to drain the transmission fluid, and drop the pan to access the connector....at one time or another this connector was available as a spare part, from where I don't know...the entire cable is available from Porsche in Germany, quite expensive ($140)...and the entire assembly with housing is also available, even more expensive ($400+) Used is more reasonable but one end or the other has to come off the cable itself unless you change out the housing too...and then you have to figure out how to reattach the removed end.....without making the cable too short....changing out the entire housing looks pretty difficult too, but your choices are limited....the last 2 photos are from another Rennlister, I don't remember who I stole them from, but they will give you a better idea of the complexity of changing out the whole assembly...I think you may be able to change out the assembly with the TT and transmission still in the car, but it will not be easy.....

thanks guys, I think I will call 928 international and price a used one.I changed the shifter cable last summer and it wasnt too bad, only took about 2 hours and I assume the bowden cable is routed in the same general area.I guess that would also be a good time to inspect the modulator hose as well.I also want to say thankyou very much for taking the time to reply

ahh you need to inspect the trans end first, as previously posted the end may be disconnected ,
if the end is broken off then you need to remove the trans pan and find it

I second Stan's suggestion. You will have to take the transmission pan off in any case, and it is very possible that it might be a free one-hour fix. Nothing to lose, and a lot to gain...
