Default Update

Its been a while since I updated this thread. (Those window switches have been keeping me busy).

I finally had a weekend day to dedicate to this project. I now have a drill-jig to make the mounting holes in the fiberglass enclosure. This ensures that the fiberglass will match up to the CNC machined mounting plate accurately every time. I also have updated the fasteners and mounting hardware, and some small modifications to the mounting plate itself.

You will notice that there are now 5 bolts holding the enclosure to the board. Each bolt has a neoprene backed washer on the top and bottom to help isolate vibration (nylon-lined lock nuts used inside the enclosure to prevent movement). There is also a layer of special closed-cell foam between the board and the fiberglass enclosure to help reduce the transference of vibration.

Other updates include enlarged vents for the amplifier, and a slightly reduced radius in the rear left corner to reduce rubbing on the rear quarter during installation and removal.

These pictures are of a final configuration. The enclosure has been finished with the seams ground down and a bit of body filler where needed. It is then sprayed with truckbed liner (although this may change to a sound deadening material, such as Cascade VSB1 in the future). The mounting board is made from King Plastic's Starboard, which is a marine-grade HDPE with special additives for UV resistance. It has a great finished texture, wont absorb water, and is resistant to most automotive fluids. It is also very easy to work with, very similar to plywood, if someone would need to add any extra holes or modify the mounting board in any way.

As before, the only amp series that this enclosure is designed to work with is the Kenwood Reference Fit line, including the mono XR-1s, the four channel XR-5s, and the five channel XR-5s.

The enclosure is natively designed for use with the Stereo Integrity BM-MKIII, of which I have several on-hand. Unfortunately, this driver proved to be so popular in the car audio world, they have sold out. I have been in collaboration with the owner, Nick Lemons, and will be the first to get an allocation of the next run of MKIV drivers (slight upgrades will included a revised carrier and upgraded motor components made from copper). These new drivers wont be available till early summer, so I have machined 12" blanks which will be available to mount other drivers. The enclosure is approximately 0.60cubic feet, so will be compatible with many slim-mount 10" subwoofers, such as the very affordably priced Dayton NS270-44.

Attached are a couple pictures I took tonight. Please ignore the spray glue overspray on the enclosure (which seemed to get all over - not sure exactly how, but that stuff is tenatious and doesnt seem to want to come off). This will not be an issue with the production versions, as I am able to purchase adhesive-backed closed cell foam - unfortunately it didnt arrive in time for this assembly.

ARGH! Something else I must, must I tell you!, have!

When do you anticipate being able to take orders and such? Pricing?

"Unofficially" I have 4 of these built and ready. Since I have a mold for the enclosure, and the mounting plates are CNC machined - these can be turned out very quickly. I anticipate less than one week order-to-fullfilment when out of stock.

However, this is still not a "for sale" or official product announcement thread. This is still the project thread. I will be working with an official Rennlist sponsor, who will be making the product announcement shortly, in keeping with forum rules.

I only have 4 of the Stereo Integrity subwoofers left at this time. I am considering making the Dayton available with a pre-machined adapter and mounting hardware. I will be testing this solution next week.

Thanks for the interest!

There will be an introductory price that I am sure many will be happy with.

As with any small 928 project/product, the goal is to make it accessible to as many people as possible. I think my pricing will be very fair so that anyone who would like this upgrade should be able to justify it. That said, posting a price here would be a violation of the rules, so it will have to wait for the next thread.

Thanks
Hans

You are a bit behind, do a search on Sharkwoofer, they are pretty awesome.

The first 90 seconds of Midnight Rambler, live by the Rolling Stones will really make the mirrors useless, same for 5:15 by the Who.

Andy,

Thanks for the interest. You may want to reference this thread for information on the commercial product.

I am getting a batch ready tomorrow, so there will be plenty in stock and available this week.

Thanks
Han
