A couple other things I forgot to mention earlier - the fit on getting these components in the spare tire location is so close, that only a couple types of interconnects will fit. I am using very flexible 8guage wire (even though the manual asks for 4guage, the run from the battery is less than 24" so I feel that 8g is both safe and practical). The RCA interconnects have to use very compact connectors. I have tested with StreetWires ZN5 series, but other with similarly compact connectors *should* work.

Here are some informational links:

(Known compatible interconnects)

Thanks for all the comments/interest.

Another use...Fill it with ice and i could chill my intercooler fluid for runs at the drag strip in the summer.

Nice work!

Nice, I'd do that but I've actually used my spare.

I just drove 50 miles to pick up a Mini S. When I got to the meeting place I got a call. Guy hit a piece of wood on the freeway and holed the side of a front tire noticed the air pressure warning light come on. So where do you find a 17 inch Perrelli run flat at 4:30 pm in Oceanside......answer is NOT so I drive home he needs to find a tire so I can buy the car ! Point is running around with no spare can get very inconvenient if for any reason you need one. Same thing happened not long ago at a Willow Springs drivers Ed. new 997 went off and ruined a tire so the guy had it towed 110 miles ....... I have AAA premium tow so my comfort radius is 200 miles with the old very brown 1980. What ever happens they will flat bed it home at least up to 3 times a year before they cancel your contract.

FYI adding foam to a box usually makes the speaker think the box is larger and will have the opposite effect your are going for.

That is true, as long as it is open-cell foam. A closed, dense foam - say like polystyrene consumes the volume and reduces the effective airspace. Loose open-cell materials like polyester foam or batting will yield the effect you mention.

On the spare tire comments - I agree that this is not the best option for all 928 owners. There are some owners who drive long distances, not in a pack, and it is more important for them to carry a spare than "tunes." Everything is a tradeoff. For those who live in the city, the idea of having a stealth stereo may be of greater importance, as replacement glass and electronics generally costs more than AAA membership or a one-time tow

On that same note though, this unit simply slips in the same way the factory cover does, so if you were planning a long trip, you could easily disconnect the module and swap it out for the spare in 10 minutes or so.

Thanks,
Hans

That makes sense. I've never had the problem of a box being to big always trying to go the other way. Can you tell me the size of the foot print for the amp?

Remember this is a PG rated forum and while it might be fun once in a while to brag a bit...."I've never had the problem of a box being to big ....."

Please refer to this page for dimensions:

http://www.kenwoodusa.com/Car_Entert...plifiers/XR-5S

The mounting board is pre-drilled for this amplifier. While it is possible that a different amp could be used, it couldnt be much larger in any direction. I have CAD drawings of the amps and the enclosure if necessary. I did look at all the available amps - even some of the oddball ones like ARC, and ZED... this is the best fit for now. I really dont see any other way to get any other 12" and 5-channel amp in the spare tire area while keeping the floor flush. Not only that, but the only driver that performs nearly as well in this space is the SB Acoustics 10" SW26DAC76-8 and it will only save you a couple dollars and is less efficient, however it certainly is an option when in stock or if someone wanted to do a similar project DIY style. The SB Acoustics driver may be a bit easier to work with as the mounting diameter is reduced, allowing for more flexible amp placement.

Thanks
Hans

Good that is is easily removed but would not long trips be the time you might most want your tunes ? But you could just throw the spare on the back seat which when you consider that a full sized flat tire is NOT going back into the well anyway, is not that rude Porsche did supply a nice plastic bag to contain the dirty flat tire.

+1

I like Ferrari's attitude on this, they supply a can of "fix-a-flat" since a Ferrari owner isn't going to change a tire anyway, they call a service.

Interesting - I've been looking at 4-channel amps to put in the stock location by the passenger seat.

Hadn't considered a 5-channel.. (I was planning on bridging 2 channels for a sub if I needed the extra bass, and driving the doors off the head unit). Time to start trawling through all the spec sheets and updating my amp sizing spreadsheet before I make some cardboard templates to check fitment. If none of my options wil fit the stock location, then something like this build will be the way to go.

For the curious, the smallest 4 channels I've found are:

Sony XM-4S
Cerwin-Vega Stealth 440.4
Soundstream STL4.320

When I had my 90 GT I found some JL audio 6 in subs. They fit in the 6 in side bolsters with a 1/2 riser ring my stereo shop made to match the interior. It let me put them in so it could still be put back to stock. With some nice component 4 in drivers and 1in Infinity Kappas in the doors and rear deck AND a Rockford Fosgate surround sound processor it sounded FANTASTIC. The combination of 2-6 in subs gave enough sub speaker area that it filled out the sub spectrum great in the car. The Infinity Kappa 4 in door drivers did great for the mid and low range down to where the subs picked up. The stereo shop I used had an audio spectrum analyzer and tuned the eq and crossovers to make sure I was getting a balanced sound spectrum from the setup.

Right after getting my GTS I could not find the JL Audio 6 in subs, the 4 in 1 Kappa components or the RF surround processor. The amps and surround processor were mounted into holes on a peice of plywood that made a false floor for the rear deck that was only 1in thick. Helped that the amps and surround were only 1 in thick themselves.
