Default Fuel Tank Cleanout

Still working on this '85 with 56,xxx original miles. It has been sitting since '92. The fuel filter and strainer was original and strainer was not good. Everything came out fine, but I can see chunks of varnished gasoline lining the walls of the tank and there seems to be a dried layer of this gunk laying at the bottom of the tank. Any ideas for getting this stuff out without removing the tank from the car?

Thinking accessing the top of the tank through the sender location. Will the gas gauge sender come out the top just by unscrewing the cap and disconnecting electric? For some reason I was thinking something else held the sender in place.

Not really doable properly with tank in car, IMHO. You might try using a pressure washer through the top access hole and see how that goes. Once you have loose stuff in there, you will need to get it ALL out, or assume you will need to pull the strainer again sometime soon. The gauge sender SHOULD come out the top hole readily, but some have reported it hanging up on the edges of the plastic bowl glued to to the floor of the tank. Mine came out easily. I undo the ring nut with two large crossed screwdrivers. You will probably need a new rubber seal for it, and they (the ring nut) go back on better with a little lube, and warmed up - if not properly tight, they can leak when the tank is full. Dropping the tank is not that hard, as long as you can get the rear of the car high enough on stands - do a search on this topic.

The tank is easy to get out and is really the only way to clean it properly.

Pressure wash all the accumulated dirt out from around the tank support straps and the filler neck before you start, or you'll have trouble seeing anything, and you'll get covered in crap.

Drain the tank, remove the pump and filter, and disconnect electrics before dropping the tank.

The only difficulty you might have is removing the vent tube, which connects the top of the tank to the filler neck through an opening in the rear bodywork. The clamps are probably rusted and you may need to cut them off, and getting that hose out is also a PITA, as it'll probably be hard and covered in dirt.

As you're dealing with fuel take all the safety precautions and have an extinguisher on hand.

I was (really still am) a total 928 newbie when I needed to drop my tank. I followed sharkins write up and had it out in two hours in my driveway with relatively little drama. The fuel I drained was very yellow.

I also found that I had allot of varnish in my tank after I reinstalled it (drained the tank when removing but did not power flush). When I reinstalled I put in new fuel (5 gal) and discovered after having the new fuel in for only a short time that it was again yellow (was changing the fuel filter). Advice from the board was to fill the tank, add sea foam and drive it. I have done so and it runs better each time. I have a full tank of fresh fuel in the car and will check fuel color again here shortly to see how it looks.
