Ditto for the nearly 2 years I owned it before that. It even got me around in the snow.

I have no doubt my current car would be a reliable DD if I needed to use it in that manner.

I'd never make it to work!!

And I'd feel guilty as hell driving the thing 8 miles a day - 4 to work and 4 back. It isn't enough to even get things warmed up.

It's an auto.

I have a similar story, when I bought my '88, I did not intend to drive it daily. Job changed, commuting requirements changed and now I am in it everyday.

It rocks as a commuter, and has been rock solid reliable. However, it does mean I have to plan maintenance carefully, as I need the car to be running Monday AM. Only once have I had to borrow wife's Suburban on a Monday and Tuesday while awaiting emergency parts from Roger thanks to some surprises during a maintenance window.

Hi Chris,

I bought my '88 S4 in June 2009 and I drive it daily. I work from home so I drive it when I am checking the mail and running errands. Pretty much everything works on the car, though I have spent a small fortune to make sure all the mechanicals are sound.

This 928 was bought to drive, not to look at. PO put only 400-500 miles per year over his 7 years of ownership. I am going at a clip of about 10,000 miles per year, smiles.

It's a great car and even strangers come up and say nice things about it.

VTY,
Joe

I bought my 1980S to use a my daily work bunky.
I travel 160km each way to the mine site every week, plus about 40km every day.
It has let me down twice in 6 months, once it was the aftermarket alarm, then the aftermarket battery isolator.
Both times I fixed it by the roadside, and wasn't late for work.

In a car of better condition, I would have no qualms letting anyone drive it every day, but I expect mine to have occasional hiccups.

+ 1 especially jim h. I have 169k on my 1980. Drive about 15k/year on my sales routes throughout no. California and Reno. My back up is my 914 so I don't have to hear from the wife to take our audi allroad. Maintenance has been the key, and I found that this car was engineered to be driven regularly like all porsches. I admit I like the early model for the insurance (assurance) of a non interference engine and more meager electronics and accessories. This car has been a salesman's dream and is a great talking piece with customers and prospects.

So K asked me today, how long will I keep the 928? That's after a few -hours- wrestling with Autozone about their %^#$!!! Duralast battery. (I'll update that thread separately). Trut is that I can buy just about any practical car that I want. At least for the next few weeks, the 928 will sit in it's proper home. I just can't see myself driving a 'common" car for most duties. There are some times when having a few extra days to get 928 projects done without infrnging on K's 4Runner time. Just not enough yet. I have a slew of "free rental car days" thanks to my business habiits. Hopefully enough for the few times when there's a 928 service/down day. So far no rental car coupons have been sacrificed.

What did you tell her, and was it the right answer?

No plans to scrap the 928 just yet. I put a lot of miles on plain old cars thanks to the rental car companies and my travel schedule. The contrast getting into the 928 after a weekor two in a [pick your full-sized rental sedan...] is pretty stark. The biggest difference, the one K sees, is that she spends virtually zero time keeping her 4Runner alive. Just drop it at the dealer, plastic numbers change hands, and they pick her up when it's done. Getting a different car for a DD wouldn't significantly change the amount of time and care that the 928 needs. The only things that would change would be gas and tire costs. And those are really a small part of the total time the car needs.

A few DD's ago, I replaced a 200k+ Saab Turbo wiith a new Explorer, mostly for business and tax reasons. Suddenly I had nothing to do on Saturday mornings. Messed up my whole life routine! I'd rather not go through -that- trauma again.

Thanks again for all the comments and stories about your own experiences with the 928 as a daily driver. Fortunately for me i was given a work truck to drive which i will be able to take home. So i will be getting the 928 on some jack stands and figuring out my ps leak. Due to all the testimonies of how much better they are the more you drive them, i will be taking it out as much as possible. Unlike my last toy that saw to much time under the car port.

Its a better experience if you always have some sort of contingency plan. Or two.
