Perdued,

Please refer to the following thread which was posted earlier today regarding the Constantine Clamp and the TT Super Bearings

"Thanks Constantine, the rebuilt torque tube is smooth as glass

Great result - its in spec. *and* you've educated a local 928 mechanic on the topic in the process, so you may well have saved other 928's in the future

The other element to the check (can't remember whether its mentioned in the write-up) is to make sure the rear pinch bolt at the aft end of the torque tube is tight.

When the flex plate bows, it pulls the rear bolt onto the splines (it runs in a groove cut into the splines), and the bolt can work loose. It may seem paranoid, but I'd recommend replacing the bolt on the rear pinch clamp at the same time as releasing the flex plate and replacing the clamp bolt in future - its the same bolt, and they're relatively cheap, and it gives you peace of mind that the rear one is tight too.

It would be interesting to know what the mechanic charges you in Yen for the job as you have described
Okay, why not. I had a bunch of stuff done but was charged 21,000 yen for the flex plate tension release / crank end play job as laid out above. If it saved my 928 and (as it was pointed out) saves others here in Japan in the future, it seems to me to be a chunk of change well spent.

Perdued,
Good value, cheaper than one good "hashi go" night out in the Ginza or Repongi.
