5 spd shift boot frame options
My plastic shift boot frame that holds the leather shift boot in place is cracked and has a couple of broken tabs so it does not snap and stay in place.
I have heard they are NLA. Any options to keep the shift boot secure?
Thanks

Yes NLA 928 552 283 02.
I have not done this but it may be possible to fit the later 80 + frame but you may need to change the leather boot as well.

Jim,
This might be a little too much of a hack, but if the front tabs are broken, but the back tab is fine, you can use a screw under the boot in the front. I had to do this on one of mine. Just insure the rear tab is firm, lift the front edge of the leather boot, and put a screw thru the boot frame into the console. The screw is hidden by the boot.

Wow, surprising to hear that stuff like this is already NLA. You might keep your eyes open for a used one....

I find it shocking that we can get the parts we can get for a 30
plus year old car.
If that car was a corvette, half of it would be NLA.

I should admit that my only other experience with an older car is a Mercedes and from what I remember their classic center keeps parts in stock or helps source them for older MB's for many decades. Sounds like Porsche is also better than average with regards to keeping parts for older cars.

but yes, MB is very good at keeping parts.
The Americans, not so much.

From what I have seen Porsche fixed issues on parts like this but I can't see a difference in the console mount so assume an 80 would work in a 79.

The frame for the 80+ has a larger apature for the leather cover whereas the earlier ones were a thinner slot shape. The frame will fit but the leather cover needs changing for the later one.
Shifter frame is $15.64. Cover from Paul or Rob or Agla would do the job.
Never done it but it looks straight forward.

Rog,
When I bought the GTS shift **** (leather boot) for my 79 I never did change the shift boot plate and the leather assembly fit fine. So maybe the leather shift ****/boots are backwards compatible w the 78-79 frames??
Jim, do you have anyone local that you can pull their assembly and pop the base plate on yours for a minute?? I would literally take a couple minutes of work to find out if the later plate will snap into place on your 79.

Chuck,
Good info - so it sounds as if the later frame would work.
If you try to use the leather cover from the early shifter it may not stretch enough to go around the frame.

Also five years later, I'm having trouble keeping the boot on my S3... Would changing to a GTS shifter be beneficial for me in any way? And if so what would the process be?
