Default Question about pedal assembly's for 5 speed?

What is the difference in the pre 87 and the 87 and up pedals?

Will the pre 87 pedals work in a 87?

This is for my upcoming 5 speed conversion.

Thanks
Greg

A quick look at PET suggests that 5-speed brake pedals are the same from 78 to 95, while there are 3 different clutch pedals:

78-86: 928 423 311 06
87-91: 928 423 311 09
92-95: 928 423 311 10

Here's a pic of a '90 pedal cluster, for posterity:

Thanks Sterling, if they do crack i can deal with that.

one more question, i have a hose from a 80, but I have bought new master and slave units, do I need a later model hose?

I got one from Greg Brown, the Goodrich hose, but i am not understanding exactly where and how it goes.

Thanks

I am sure that once you start you will understand very quickly.

Like you I will be doing the 5 speed conversion probably tomorrow.
I just need to mate the 60-2 ring on the flywheel then I am good to go.

However, I am not using the factory pedal assembly. Brake pedal yes, clutch no.

Mike Simard told me, along with others that a stock 60-2 reluctor ring is just a little bit to big to fit on anything but a 85-86 flywheel, which would all ready have the ring on it.
Just a heads up on that.

Take lots of pictures please, it will be at least a week before I start on mine, still waiting on a few parts.

I agree, it will all make sense once I get into it, just trying to get all the parts I need so I do not have a lift tied up for a week or two.

another idea is to get a standalone pedal...Tilton makes them....the downside is you still have the large brake pedal...

I have a pedal assembly out of a 80 5 speed, so I am pretty much committed at this point.

Greg-

RE: the '80 hose, do you mean the metal line that runs from the clutch master? The stock setups have 2 metal lines and a flex line in between- metal from CMC to the flex line, then metal from the flex line to the slave. On an S4 GB's Goodridge line replaces the flex line and the 2nd metal line, so you end up with the S4 hardline (928 423 197 02) from the CMC to the swaybar mount, then the GB line to the slave.

Here's the S4 hardline from CMC to the swaybar mount, and you can see the factory flex line. Greg's line pretty much runs straight along the crossmember to the slave (can't find a pic right now, will edit later....)

Yes, Rob I have the 80's metal and hose that goes to the sway bar mount, and the GB hose with the banjo fitting on it, I think it goes from the sway bar mount to the slave.

I also think I am going to need a late model hose from the master to the sway bar as I have heard the early vs late master cylinders have a different hose orientation.

Do you know if that is correct?

Or does the GB line take the place of both lines?

Greg, The GB hose is about 23" and goes from the sway-bar mount to the slave, see pic below (our S4). It replaces the stock flex hose and the hard-line that goes between the pan and starter (31 and 31A in the drawing below)-- which greatly simplifies things.

You still need the factory hard-line from master to sway-bar mount (#30, below), plus the mounting bracket and clip. I have an extra 87-90 hard-line (needed one, wound up with two), you are welcome to it for shipping.

Cheers, Jim

I just figured that I would let you know that I started this conversion today.
I also needed to do my MM & OPG, so I just pulled the motor, transmission and all.

As for the flywheel I tore a timing ring off a flywheel I had, and then I sized it up on the 1980 flywheel and it was obvious that machining work would be required to make it work.

However I had an aluminum flywheel kicking around. So I put the timing ring on that one. Using my single disc 87 5 speed flywheel I lined up the missing teeth and installed the ring onto it. I will then be able to tell you have an aluminum flywheel works with the LH system, and daily driving as well.
I will be using Spec stage III+ discs with their modified sachs pressure plate.

More info on the GB hose please. I was going to make a hard line to replace mine but I'd love to go with a flex hose if it's rated for this.

Goodrich hose? What does that mean and where can I get one?
