Sure, but my engine is still due for a complete WP/TB / Topp-end/ full gasket set etc..etc.. So the engine is coming out soon! :-)

I'm in the middle of my own TB/WP job right now (everything is already taken apart) and I am anxious to go home and check to see if I have this washer. It was mentioned that in Dwayne's guide it was there in one picture and gone during re-installation...could someone point out the picture that shows the washer in question? I just want to make sure that I have the correct washer in the correct place. Thanks!

Posts 2 and 6 in this very thread show the washer and where it fits in the piston/pushrod stack. Do you need something different?

This the washer we're referring to?
The stem is anchored to the tensioner pulley by the tensioner ground wire. The washer can slide right off when you lift the pulley off the engine, which subsequently yanks wire and the stem off. The washer drops right off into the drain pan as described. This is the condition of my assembly once I placed it on the bench. I just got lucky.

That's perfect, thanks so much! Sometimes when it comes to looking at exploded diagrams I have a small degree of uncertainty as to whether or not I'm looking at the right thing (the washer, in this case), so the picture makes it 100% clear. I don't remember that washer being there when I took everything apart, so now I really have to check to confirm. Thanks again!

In the pictures below you can see that the washer that is discussed in this thread is in place, but you should be able to see the end of the spring behind it?
I am in the process of completing my first TB/WP job and was very careful to keep track of the washer when taking the tensioner off, but I do not recall there being a spring. It was only when I noticed a spring in Dwayne's TB/WP thread that I started to realise that there should be one.
The pictures below were taken before disassembly. They are not taken from the best angle to see the spring, but I think in the second photo you should be able to see the black end of it.
I am going to get a spring (part No 928 105 577 03) but do you think that the tensioner would have operated without it?

Yep, it looks like the spring is missing. The tensioner will work fine without it, but the alarm function will not be functional. With the spring (and washer) in place, and the belt tensioned adequately (above around 4.0 on the 9201 gauge), then the back end of the pin [1, below] bottoms in the piece that it slips into [6]-- completing a circuit to ground. If the tension is lower, then the spring [5] pushes the pin [1] up and breaks the contact.

With no spring, the pin sits in the bottom of the bore and completes the circuit with any pressure at all. So the belt can still be tensioned, just no alarm.

Replace the spring, check the washer, and also consider replacing the flat metal contact with the wire shown in post #19 above-- the flat metal contact tends to fatigue and break, causing a false alarm.

Here's a pic (from the '85 service tech info):

Thank you for the fast reply Jim. I will be getting a spring and replacing the flat metal contact. I was happy that everything was going well with this job, at least this is only a minor setback.
I just googled Friday Harbour, looks like a nice part of the world.

Cheers,
Gary.

Happy to help, and Blue Mountains is pretty cool also. We have fond memories of catching the train from Circular Quay for a day of hiking, and sharing the train back with a mob of schoolkids heading home. Good times!
