Default 1981 Gas tank strainer removal

Like so many others, I am having the issue where the gas tank strainer at the bottom of the tank is siezed to the steel sleeve inside the tank. It basically just spins when I try to remove it and won't come out. I've read thru the threads on this and if I'm not mistaken, is the only solution a new (used) tank? I wouldn't think adding epoxy over the joint between the strainer/tank would last.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Are we talking about this?

It's not seized if it's spinning, it's supposed to do that. It has a raised lip that locks into a groove in the bottom of that fitting. Removing it without destroying the strainer is not easy (I'm averaging 50/50).

My question is, why bother when a new assembly is only $50? I do wish the strainer was available without the fitting.

EDIT - sorry, re-read your post. The steel fitting is just spinning in the tank?

Thats correct. The steel fitting/sleeve is spinning along with the strainer. They appear to be siezed together.

time for a new used tank, unless you want to mess around with removing the old parts this will require cutting

I had one do this. Sealed it with PC-11 gas proof epoxy, lasted long time, no leaks. Eventually changed the tank out, removed the insert from the strainer without any cutting of tank. Gave tank away to a friend....He cleaned tank up, ran a strong wire in through the top and out the strainer hole, slid the insert down the wire, coated the hole in gas proof epoxy, pulled the insert into place, and let it dry. Last I heard it was fine....

I did one a friends 83 a couple of weeks ago but used JB Weld Auto applied liberally to the inside ot thespigot on the tank then slid the insert back in from the outside. Afaik it is not leaking so far.

JB Weld claims to be petrol resistant. I would bet that Devcon also make a suitable epoxy.

Edit
There is a flange on the spigot on the tank that the insert sits behind, such that when you screw the new strainer back in the sqaure section O ring seal (remeber to order a new one as they don't come with one by default) seals against the flange on the tank thus not relying on the steel insert being glued in well enough to provide a seal.

Ditto on the tank repair. I did it as well 4 months ago and still no leak.

Use Sharkskin's write up for the tank removal. http://members.rennlist.com/sharkski...0-FuelTank.htm

When I did mine I had an intank pump that had corroded to the insert and was spinning. I pulled the tank and tugged till the insert and pump popped out. Took quite a bit of soaking in JB Blaster to free the pump from the insert.

I used JB Weld to glue the insert back in. I could not get my insert back in past the lip mentioned above as it seemed rock hard so I trimed the lip back with a cutter and did not seem to affect the seal as I have no leaks. I ensured I had complete coverage with the JB Weld. I did use a new gasket and let it set up several days.

Default Will try Epoxy first.

Thanks for all replies. Trey didn't have a good tank so I'll try the JB Weld idea this weekend and post my result. It certainly can't hurt trying.
