Good question. I happen to have examples of both styles. The 316 clamps are actually AWAB brand (ABA and AWAB merged in at some time in the past, and I beleive both are owned by Norma). The 316 clamps to seem to have a rolled edge, although it is much smaller. The 304 clamps have an obvious flared edge, while the 316 do not. However, the 316 clamp edge is very smooth, where other clamps seem to have a sharper edge - I can feel the difference running my finger over the edge.

The ABA clamp is referred to as the model S40, or "Original" stainless steel - it is a nicer looking clamp, and the housing is one-piece and slightly more compact. On the other hand, the inside surface of the AWAB housing is shorter, which should help it conform to the hose shape better. Both clamps have excellent holding power.

A quick search turned up the ABA S40 clamps here: http://www.truechoice.com/prodinfo.asp?number=ABA%2012

The ABA original series 316ss are virtually identical to the 304ss. I phased out the 304's because there are more sizes available in 316 (actually, sizes 3, 4, and 6 are only available in 316ss) and with higher nickel content, they polish up nicely. They are also approved for marine applications. The cost differential between 304ss and 316ss was 10-20 cents per clamp.

Does anyone know what size clamps (dia in inches) our coolant hoses require of the top of their head? I meant to measure mine last night.
