Jump post cover - just outboard of the upper radiator hose is the jump post. Above that is a 14 pin connector. The connector is prone to corrosion when water from rain or washing the car runs down the hood/fender and directly onto the connector. Porsche provided a plastic cover to protect these two critical items. Also there should be a short 6-8" strip of rubber or weather stripping to further re-direct the water away from this area.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jim. so it was what I thought, but there is a newer, better cover. my jump post has the little black cap on the post, but nothing covering the 14 pin connector. anything I can do to prevent needing to fix something is good. so far I have not had any elec gremlins in this car and prefer to keep it that way.

just ordered from Roger.

Bob the part you have now is just a Hot post CAP, you need a NEW hot post COVER and a NEW Hot post threaded cap, (both of these parts are from an 1988 S4).
Follow the directions in the previous post to update the 11MM hot post stud, then your NEW cap will be able to be screwed onto the OLD stud.
NOTE the threaded studs are NLA so updating the old part is the only way......

What is wrong with post cap he has now? Doesn't it already fit the threads on the post?

Nothing is wrong with the post cap, but Porsche learned that water intrusion into the 14 pin connector just above the hot post caused all kinds of electrical gremlins and headaches. Their fix was the cover and later the weather strip, which is a very easy and economical update that will eliminate many many future problems.

the problem with the early Hot post STUD is that the cap that fits to it is a press on fit.
When you fit a hot post cover then the new style hot post cap has a nut inside it that will thread onto the small threaded stud of the later style hot post stud.( this will then hold the cover in place,
if you use the press on type cap the cap will usually fall off then the new cover will also fall off)
As previously mentioned the new style hot post stud is NLA . So drilling a hole in the end of the stud then fitting the correct size bolt that threads into the cap is the way to update your old style hot post stud

Default Eletrical connections

There use to be a spray that was used to isolate electrical connections. It was sold on late night TV, but the presentation was impressive. The engine was flooded with water and stalls. The engine was then dried and sprayed with the isloating spray. The engine was then started and continued to run while being being flooded with a fire hose.

I use Dielectic grease on all eletrical connections to keep moisture out.
