Blew a tire - a reminder to all to drive safely
I was on my way to the airport (flight home for Thanksgiving) when I had a little encounter with some road trash. I don't know exactly what it was(predawn and foggy, I hardly saw it before hitting it), but it definitely left a mark.
There was a quick thud, and my car immediately hammered left. I didn't even have time to hit the brakes (which may be for the best, as I believe this is not what you are supposed to do?) before she was painting the concrete median. Luckily I regained control almost immediately.
Needless to say, I missed the flight. What a great start to the Thanksgiving holiday. On the other-hand, I am alive and in good health (well, minor cold), so I must count my blessings. This could have turned out much, much worse.
Here are a couple pictures from after I got to take a better look at it. (edit: the picture of the rim has the rim with the outside on bottom. the chunk missing came from the inside edge)
And yes, these tires were low mileage, in good condition, and properly inflated.
So please all - remember to drive safely.
And if someone has a single 16" manhole rim they would be willing to part with . . . . I am in need.

I thank God you're fine and the car can easily be repaired. Sorry you missed the flight, clearly wasn't meant to be. I have 2yo Kumho's on one of my sets and the one front tyre (LOTS of tread left) had a bubble on the inside wall .... definite blowout at some point.

Hehe. Flight indeed wasn't to be. Thanksgiving is always a good holiday though. Now I just need to find a turkey.
I'll give Mark and Greg a shout after the holiday.
Roger's looking for a set of braided brake lines.
Then we'll see from there.
Sorry Cpayne - but I actually like the look of the original wheels.
Thanks for correcting me Gus. I was at lack of a better term, so I used blowout when it may not be entirely correct. Whatever I hit punched a hole through the tire and obviously bit the rim. Physically I doubt it was overly large though, as there were no damage underneath the car going back.
Regardless though, it is absolutely my fault for failing to respond quickly enough to avoid it.
