Default Drove in the snow tonight

We have about 4" of snow this evening north of Seattle. The temp is 23F and the car handled very well. I was happy to learn this.

Be careful. Seems like the power would make it hard to handle. Glad it's doing well for you.

I have spun out in the rain, traction is very poor in the wet, I wonder what the snow will be like...

I have driven my 928 quite a bit in the snow. With the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus tires it was stable and actually very easy to drive. Have driven in up to 4" many times. Starting in 2nd gear in the S4 (my year does), it is easy to get going. ABS makes stopping comfortable. The tires make a big difference. Compound is rated AA traction A Temp. Only problem was they were rated for 45k wear. Got 13k out of the rears.

Jeff thanks for that info , I put a set of A/S plus on my wifes vette . So far they seem good in the rain .

It's almost always a function of the tires. I figured the shark would be excellent in the snow due to its 50/50 distribution.

I dunno, but your car didnt spin on it's own.

Traction in wet comes down to tires, suspension setup, and driver, in no specific order, but each individually can have a HUGE impact.

I have no doubt, that a 928 in the snow, on the right tires, with a supple suspension, with a driver aware of the limitations, would do quite well.

Yea, had my first drive in snow with mine yesterday. Wasn't a problem at all, and it actually handeled quite good. Though they are putting on so much salt on the roads here, it's almost as driving on rain.

But I'm running brand new studless Nokian Hakkapelitta(which is the king of wintertires around here)

I drove several michigan winters with Blizzack winter tires and got everywhere I ever needed and it handled VERY well if you didn't get stoopid. Only trouble was the spoiler acted like a plow and I had to remove it.

Tires. Have only rear drive cars and all have 4 real snow tires for winter (not "all season"). Nine twenty Eight is best due to 'road hugging weight' and LSD. Even 2 800, lb Merkurs are OK with 4 blizzaks or even Winterforce snows. The XR's kinda "dumbbell" if spun due to heavy bumpers at each end, but even they are fine with the snows. The difference between these cars with snows compared to summer tires is just plain unbelievable. Spoilers are an issue and even an inch of ground clearance difference is big.

I agree on the XR4 man. With Blizzaks, mine was unstoppable. OT story. Was driving up to Big Bear to go skiing once. The CHP had stopped traffic and unless you had 4WD you had to chain up. I wasn't equipped with chains but had my Blizzaks. Didn't want to argue with the guy about the merits of the Blizzak so I told him my car was AWD. I pointed to the little electroflourescent display on the dash that tells you the doors are open or the road is icy (has a little snowflake or a snowflake with a triangle. Told him that meant it was in AWD mode. He said "ok, have a safe drive" and away I went up the mountain, and consequently down, with nary a slip or slide.

Loved those tires and that car.

Speedtoys: I agree, it was ultimately my fault, while doing the speed limit, I took a corner too hard in the wet. Doesn't help that my tires aren't the greatest though, and yet somehow they are rated for mud and snow...

I will pull maybe...40-45 cars per year out of the tirewall, turn 8, at Sears Point...and maybe 150-175 total between all of sears and thunderhill combined (wrecks not jut flat tires, engines, etc)

98% of the non racers always..ALWAYS blame the car. Cold tires, new swaybar, AWD bias..something. The remaining 2% understand they drove beyond THEIR limits, and physics caught up to them.

98% of all racers, blame themselves for not seeing something happening around them, or..ya.."I StrekStrekStrekStreked up". The remaining 2% got collected by someone else...and ended up in the pile.


The point im trying to make, is the single largest difference between someone that thinks theyre a good driver, and someone that IS a good driver...is that one of them is aware of conditions, and one is not. Conditions are everything from your health and mental state, to the state of hardware on your car, to weather/surface conditions, and the _condition_ of the traffic around you.
