Default Trans Tear-Down Thread

I've gone through all the trans rebuild threads that I could fine. Unfortunately it looks like John V's thread no longer has the pictures. I have the transaxle on the stand and the differential is out. Now I'm moving to the selector rods. From the WSM, it looks like I have to drive out the pins to free the forks from the rods. So, my question is do I need to remove the brass freeze plugs at the front in order to get the rods out? Am I right in assuming I need to drive those pins out to remove the folks from the rods? And, do the rods come out from the front or the rear? Thanks!

Those pictures are reloaded at the very end of the thread I think by vilhuer, although they lack the descriptions.

Yes to driving them out on the early trans, rods come out through the diffy area. You should remove the detents, thats as far as I've gotten.

Please document the hell out of this, Bill.

Bill, check on the CD's in section 2.15, tech spec manuals, 1978.

That particular document represents the introductory year for the series of yearly updates.

It has some very descriptive information about the internals of the earliest boxes, which aren't all the different from the ones you are repairing.

Try to save every single piece. Some of this stuff is getting really hard to source, based on other rennlisters accounts.

Yes, key point being Greg's instruction. Those six or so pins need to be knocked out of the shift forks. You can hit them a hell of a lot harder than I thought would be possible, without bending the shift rods. I'd be lying if I told you I remember which way each rod comes out, though.
