First DE with my 928
#16
James,
In all honesty, there are very few mods in my immediate future. Primarily because, at this point, they won't help me, I'm nowhere near pushing what I have. Believe me, I love to spend money and time on adding bits, so this will be hard for me.
I'll take care of the required maintenance ( thanks for the tip on the transmission), but until my skills and my pocket gets a bit deeper, my budget will be spent on time in the seat.
Minor exception will be a set of Bilstiens in the near future. I need new shocks anyhow....

It was really disappointing to see no other 928's out there.
An important message I'd like to spread is that a reasonably well sorted stock 928 is a blast on the track.
You don't need more than what you already have to get out there and have a blast, so don't assume you need to build up a serious track beast to get started. ( I take no responsibility for where you may end up.....)

I'm so jealous!
I've been wanting to do a DE for four years. Ever since I got this car and something always comes up.
Good for you for getting it out there and having some fun!

Truth is, I hang out with a group of fairly hard core 911 guys ( with some Boxsters and Caymans thrown in).
We meet every Saturday for coffee:

They go to the track regularly, and without their support and encouragement, I would have never done it.
You can translate "support and encouragement" as "constant grief over my 928" btw....

For a road course of that size in a street car--first weekend out--that is AWESOME top speed!
Great job!!
For reference I topped 138.25 mph in a 600HP NASCAR setup race car at Las Vegas tri-oval. My average speed for my best lap was 120mph.
What you did far exceeds that--you had 1 extra person in the car--far less horsepower, lesser suspension, wheels, tires, etc. and it was a road course. And I couldn't drive that car on the road (especially in New Jersey because you can't make left turns in Jersey )
You should be damn proud of that run,

Yes, full course.
On back stretch, over 120. No sure how much over 120, as my eyes were on the road and the upcoming braking points, but ~120 at the top of the blind crest near the flag stand, so a little more on the downhill past that.
Its exhilarating to come out of Oak Tree, and keep you foot on the floor until your nerves give out as you approach the braking zone for the roller coaster downhill turns.
Like I said, lots more speed to be had as my skill increases. I was passed a fair amount.

It's a very long straight....so if I exited the turn ( Oak Tree) cleanly and carrying a little speed and kept my foot on the floor, the speed just kept building. Its a huge rush, and actually, for me was the scariest (not hardest, just scariest) part of the course, as it is a blind hill and you can't ignore the sensation of speed at that point, with the windows down and the motor roaring.
A more common scenario, however, was that I had traffic behind me coming out of the turn, so I had to lift and give the point by. This meant my speed maxed at between 80 and 100 depending on who passed and where....just keeping the record straight.
I wish I had some video of the speedo to confirm. Next time...

Tracking a 928 is a natural high. If it were not for the 500+ ftlbs of torque connected to the accelerator of my street car, I'd have little interest in driving it. Even a stock 928 is that much fun on the track!

Better late than early... especially on the esses. Our PCA Region (First Settlers) does 2 DE events per year at VIR, and I think I've only seen one 928. Our spring 2011 event is 20-22 May, 3 days on the Full Course. Registration is via www.motorsportreg.com and will open 20 Feb. Come on out and join us.

As a related note, I now completely understand why people look for sunroof delete and/or sport seats.
I am 6'4" and normally fit nicely. However, with a helmet, I am out of headroom and the helmet rubs the roof.
