The 100VRS will fit, but it is way overpriced and has anemic low frequency response. I looked into buying these in bulk, and the price was still quite high. However, if you run across a pair used or some other great deal on them, they are one of the few currently available comp sets that do work without modifications to the door panel.

Well I took a stab at the custom drivers. Been playing around with them for about a month now. I had four sets of drivers made with different cone materials: treated paper, kevlar, polypropylene, and carbon fiber.
After breaking them in, and listening to them... I think that the carbon fiber is the winner, and what I would be having manufactured if I went this route.
Here are some pictures of that carbon fiber driver. It uses the stock bolt-pattern, and is shallow enough that it does not need any adapters to be used in the stock location.
I have also found a set of off-the-shelf tweeters which sound great with these drivers, are affordable, and with the aid of a small adapter fit inside the factory tweeter mount. I will be doing in-car impedance and response measurement, and making 928 specific crossovers (if I can justify the business model).
These are designed to be some of the best 4" drivers every made, with an eye specifically on the 928 market. Any thoughts/feedback? Would anyone buy a set of just the drivers, or a complete setup with crossovers and tweeters? (BTW, these are designed to play low-enough to cross directly with an upcoming direct drop-in subwoofer enclosure, stay tuned for that next week).
Thanks
Hans

I think we are getting close to creating a Hans forum.
Ballpark $$$???
Any thoughts on the 4x6 project? I'm not against taking a hammer to my door for two speaker conversion with new panels, most OB (sorry Glen) owners would rather stay "original".

Sterling - these use the same bolt pattern as stock, so you can press out your factory driver from the mounting ring, and use the factory grills (would need to be mounted over the driver) but then would look 100% stock. I have found a grill which does look very similar to stock, but it is a bit larger than stock - however, it is very affordable. You would be surprised what grills can cost. I looked into custom tooling for the grills, and its just not justifiable.
E - I have been trying to hunt down a set of those 4x6 speakers to take a look at. If someone has one they can lend me, it would be very helpful.
These drivers are not cheap, but I think they are very affordable for what they are. I know my costs on the drivers, which obviously I cant share. I will have a better idea after I build the crossovers as to what the cost of component set would be. I can say that the original pole numbers dont really apply anymore. These will likely fall into the $150-$200/pair range.
Thanks,
Hans

Either way it sounds like a damn good price point for what it is.

The flange is 3.75mm thick, from the rear of the magnet to the rear of the flange is 42mm.
For comparison, the same distance on the stock driver is 43mm - these are designed to fit perfectly.
Thanks

How do you do this??? Mine look as if they are glued on to the outer edge of the speaker. If they are just supposed to be pressed on then maybe this is something that a PO did...?
Did you determine if the price that you are looking at is just for the driver or for the complete setup with the crossover, etc.??

I dont have a cost for the crossovers yet. I will be making them myself, so will know the costs soon.
There is glue, but it will break. At least it did on the drivers I have pulled from an 87.
Thanks
