Default Installed front spoiler..... UGH!

So i finally got all the parts/screws etc i needed to install the front chin spoiler today. WOW what a PAIN IN THE ***! seriously. the fender holes lined up, but he spoiler DID NOT want to go over the brake duct/vent inlets. then i found out (remembered) that the troll of a PO had hit something hard enought in the front to bent the bottom of the radiator core support making the grill slats and spoiler even more a a PITA> but, in the end it all turned out well. so how do i get the white "crud" off the black plastic of the new spoiler?

here is the bent spot

Grill hole and spoiler mount that wont fit.... thank god for zipties!

another shot of the ding... he really did nail somthing...

yay!

Looks nice, and yets it's a PIA.

Two tricks - heat gun and / or let it sit out in the hot sun for a few hours to soften it up a bit.

My PO must be your PO's brother as my '81 has a similiar bend. Unfortunately mine did not come with the front spoiler, so I made one. Kind of a cross between the early style and newer s4 type. The protection plates do work well, they have saved my '86.5 front numerous times already.

Ah, before I saw the protection plates I was thinking, 'Hmm, that new spoiler looks really nice, it's a shame he can't drive it in the real world.'

I'll tell you, I've done all kinds of things to my car but I'm hesitant to put a new spoiler on or get it painted. I just know that as soon as I do I'm gonna grind the spoiler and snap one of the sides just like it's split now or if I get it painted someone's going to door ding me in a parking lot and make my head explode.

Sucks to think like that I know. I'd really be interested in hearing a 1 year update on the new spoiler/protection plate combo from someone.

Question: does the protection plate wear away as you grind it? Is it something you'd replace over time to keep your spoiler in good shape? They are aluminum, right?

Not trying to hijack but do you have any pick of what you made?

the plates are 3/8 thick aluminum. that would be ALOT of grinding. or you can always weld a few passes of aluminum beads on the end for a wear surface.

Bring that thing on over to 3rd Coast! There's still time!

This is what you need to blacken the spoilers:

I know the feeling, I installed a brand new spoiler on my lowered 79. It worked great as a snow plow one spring day on my way to Road America for a DE.
