Default 1980 928 dash instrument problem

Hi all,

I have been reading the forum over the past few days and searched and tried most things i have found info on.

I have a problem with the dash, the car was restored and now that i have installed the dash back into the car the instruments are giving me problems.

When i put the ignition on reds the fuel pressure goes up all the way, then when i start the car it stays the same, tacho still on zero, battery volts on zero, fuel level on zero and water temp on zero, but when i put the handbrake down the fuel level and the water temp go all the way up, battery volts still at zero and tacho still at zero. I located the handbrake wire and no shorts to the handbrake wire?

Dont know what to do???? any advice will be much appreciated.

Regards
Dave

Hello Dave and welcome,

Lot's of possibilities here, of which the easiest are: fuses, dash connectors and/or grounds.

More info would be helpful: what MY is your 928 and was restored?

it is a 1980 928, car has been resprayed , and the interior has been retrimmed. I just ordered a new printed circuit board as the old one was okay but i thought while its out ill replace the 30year old unit, also i took to instrument cluster to get inspected, just hope i can sort this mess out.

It's not the instrument cluster. If I I were you I would:
- take out the old fuses, clean all fuse contacts thoroughly, put in all new fuses
- clean the dash connectors with a pencil eraser
- clean the grounds beneath/behind the pod and the grounds above fuse panel

Try it with the old circuit board and keep the new one as a spare. If that doesn't work, replace the circuit board with the new one.

new circuit board hasn't fixed the problem, had to change it anyways as the old one was just worn out.

not sure where to locate these grounds behind the pod or on the pod or near the fuse box. (cleaned all the fuse holders) and now waiting on some new fuses.

Also found under the dash the central module box, out of one of the plugs there is one wire(brown with red stripe) that is out of the plug, could this be the problem? only thing is i don't know where i need to put it as there a five empty places to put it in

any help will be appreciated

regards
David

I would discourage the use of pencil erasers for cleaning electrical contacts.

Some big players in industry have found;
The eraser is desctructive (removes metal), leaves a residue (film on the metal) and contamination (small particulate stuck to the metal).
It also leaves the surface uneven due to uneven pressure which can cause intermittant contacts where vibration is a factor.

I use to use this method for years until one day I see the metal beginning to disappear from under the eraser.
I did some checking and found it is no longer a recommended practice.

Use a chemical cleaner.
Don't use isopropyl alcohol. It leaves a thin film that inhibits conduction.
A product called DeoxIT (No affiliation) is good and supported by the industry.

They have several application methods; however, the squeeze tube is very easy to use with a soft cloth and is only $6.95.

Cheers,

Are you sure you got the plugs at the back of the pod in their correct places? The right one and the center one are really easy to accidently swap.

Have you checked the little round dial under the instrument pod? The one that controls the instrument dimming?

I have a similar issue. My indicator lights work but the dash lights don't work
I am thinking it may be the dimmer switch. Is the dimmer switch a weak link within the dash electronics?
