Question Wheel Restoration

I have a 1984 S with the original manhole cover rims that are platnum in color that I would like to have freshened up as the rest of the car looks like new.

Can anyone tell me if powder coating is a good alternative as I have checked with a number of wheel restorers and they can not refurbish anodized/platnum wheels but can only respray them in the typical Porsche silver.

Any and all suggestions, recommendations would be appreciated

Never heard of powdercoating wheels before. Maybe the baking process would warp them?

Powder coating is a waste in my opinion. Also, cracks do not show always on PC. There is no reason the wheels cannot be prepped and painted any color you want. There is always Autozone

Our PCA Region just had a tech session this AM with a powder coating firm (E-Tech in Walnut Creek, CA). They had a number of wheels on display that they had successfully powder coated. The oven temp for baking is 400F which they claim they have researched and is OK _ keep under 500F or metallurgy may change. They claim over 200 colors are available in a number of finishes.

One alternative would be just to polish out the wheels. They sand off the anodizing and polish to gloss. I had this done and cost was around $100/wheel (included at no extra charge some straightening of wheel dents and rash removal) I don't know powder coating price. Unless you have an Anniversary Edition 928 and want to keep the correct finish, then industrial metal finishers can anodize in many different colors, but it will cost you.

Alloy Wheel Repair Sepcialists is a national firm that restores wheels. It operates as a franchise, but is based in Georgia. Here is the link.

Our local franchisee was also at our tech session this AM. This franchisee mostly works for two large Mercedes dealers and keeps a mobile trailer parked at one dealer. No anodizing though. They also work with the powder coating company to produce some awesome finishes. I saw one powder-coated wheel with polished center and rim which was just stunning.

Talk to the guys at www.928Intl.com I'm pretty sure they know a place to have the wheels reanodized to original condition. Last I heard it was something like $500 to $600 for all 4.
