Question Never before heard of Speedometer Problem? Porsche Techs say I'm crazy.

After installing a newly rebuilt trans and posi diff in my 84, I have no pulse when the sensor(brand new) is installed correctly. However, if I rotate the sender 90 degress, I get pulses, speedometer reads twice as fast as I am actually going. All connections are perfect. Printed circuit film verified perfect. Speedometer worked fine before the trans / posi rebuild. I've tried a different known to be good speedometer anf 5 sensers with the same results.

Car did not have posi before.

Seems like a magnet alignment problem but I am told that that is impossible by 928 International.

Anybody ever heard of this kind of problem before? Suggestions?

Thanks,

Well, if it reads twice as fast then there has to be two pulse generators. The bottom line is that the transmission is sending twice as many signals as it should. How about the sensor being to far in?

The reason for two pulses is that the senders actually have a left and right side.

So when it is rotated both the left and right sides are being counted.

This only proves that the wiring, printed circuit, speedometer and sender are OK.

Again, it seems like the magnet carrier is out of alignment. (Magnets are dead center, sender only reads left or right of dead center.)

Wondering if they put a magent carrrier from a different year. There is a sender part number change starting in 85.

Depth of the sender is not adjustable. It is sitting flush and proper.

There are two differrent rear dif covers and the sensor location is different. Put the wrong cover on and there is no signal. That is the issue ....trust me on this one. I have seen it before

Tom at 929 International says the part number on the cover is correct for my car.

Are you the same Jim Bailey that works or worked at 928 International?

Yep... he is. You may have verified the cover to the car, but did you verify the cover to the trans? And is the trans the same year trans as what was in there before?

Jim,

Tom says that you sre the one that sold the trans and diff to me. Says it's funny that you responded to my issue.

What's up with that?

Now that's customer service. He doesn't work there anymore and still is taking care of you.

Consider yourself lucky. Buy a lotto ticket.

Jim,

This is Jimmy G. from Illinois. I bought a lot of stuff from you at 928 Intl. Ordered this through you a couple of years ago.

Remember the shipping crisis? Shipping got expensive?

I only needed to send back the torque converter and valve body to get my core charge?

According to the paperwork in 928 Intls hands, the trans, diff and posi are all correct.

They can not explain why the brand new senser does not send a pulse untill I rotate it 90 degrees.

When it was ordered it took a while to locate a posi unit. It was completely rebuilt.

Yes I did sell it to you. There are two diff covers and the location of the alloy wheel with the 9 magnets is different to align them so possible a mismatch. 928 International subcontracts the rebuilding of transmissions so I have no knowledge of what actually is inside yours. Pull the diff cover (it is a simple paper gasket) and measure where the alloy wheel is located, it was removed when the slip was installed. Misalignment still remains the most likely problem. The cover and the trans might be correct to each other but maybe it has the wrong alloy wheel. If so ,then putting on the "other" diff cover may be all you need to do.

Jim,

So if I pull the cover, what am I trying to determine? What am I measuring? From the side of the case to where?

Where should the sender hole be in relationship to some known point on the magnet carrier?

Should the carrier be centered on the sender recess?

Thanks for your input,

Jimmy G.

Tom at 928 International agrees with Jim Bailey.

Quote from Tom, "Jim Bailey is never wrong."

They are shipping me the other differential cover.

Hopefully, that is all that will be needed to get the speedometer working again.

I will post the results as soon as I have them.

Thanks,

Jimmy G.
