If you have space to keep it and dismantle it you can't go wrong financially. Buy it then decide wether it's worth resurrecting. If it isn't part it out - it won't be difficult to get more than $200 back - and use the profit and maybe some of the parts for a more worthwhile example.

I'd be hard pressed to pass up a $200.00 928, but I've seen a few that they could not give me for a $2000.00.

If you are sure that the transmission is the only thing it needs, $200 might be a good deal. Just remember that even when it's fixed and cleaned-up, it will not be worth more than $5k or so. So, don't overspend on it, unless you are in love with it and want to keep it forever.

That trans is a 3spd auto and you should be able to find a decent used one for under $1k (maybe well under $1k) and it will take about $1k to put it in... If the car actually does start and run and only needs the trans you can get some cheap seat covers and just drive it till it dies. To make it nice will take $10k minimum. I doubt the A/C is working and would probably take $1k to go through it fully and make it right.

Interior work can be cheap if you by vinyl cover and put them on yourself or you can go full boat to a Paul Champagne interior but that would cost way more than the car is worth if you went all in...of course you can do bits and pieces to get that how you want it...

Paint if needed is grossly expensive these days...at least to get it done right...

Just depends on what you want and how far you want to take it and of course since you can't drive it you really don't know what else other than the trans might be messed up...

Pics would be nice, but honestly, at $200, if it is too expensive to fix, just putting it on ebay you'd probably be able to sell it for more than it would cost you as is. Fix the tranny and check your timing belt. If you are not a diy type, you would wind up sinking quite a bit of money into it before you have a driver. But if you can get someone knowledgeable about 928s to get an good look at it, you might have something worth driving. Maybe you wouldn't make a profit on it, but you might get a good driver out of it for not too much money. $200 plus a professional PPI by a 928 mechanic is still a decent gamble to take, IMHO.

The problem with parting a car is you need room and tools to take it apart PROPERLY... if you just start pulling things out of the car then you will break them and they won't even be worth anything. Body panels and glass would still have value, but they are a B*itch to ship!

There is a post about a $2500 '82 Comp pkg car for sale that is already a DD and looks to have a reasonable interior and needs nothing but a new owner to sit in the seat and drive it...that would honestly be a better deal I suspect... Of course I am a glutton for punishment and I'd buy BOTH of them!

A gold 82 with a spoiler. I'm thinking it's a special edition Weissach. Does it have the manhole cover wheels and a badge on the dash (some are missing) and a two tone interior?

It's easy to spend $5K on a $200 928. The trick is spending $200 on a $5K 928

For 200 bucks you can't go wrong. The people on this forum are worth that much in entertainment value alone. Plus you'll have a great time learning how to work on your car. "BUY IT!"

Chances of it becoming a nice driveable car for as little as $5k are fairly slim, so the selling price is a bit immaterial to the project total cost. Many of us would buy it on the spot for $200, and decide later if its a parts car, or something to save, but thats because we already own a few and can shift parts etc. around between them.

Unless you want to become a mechanic, AND spend a few thousand dollars I suggest you pass it on to someone willing to do the work and spend the money.

If you are looking at it as potential profit, stick with the day job. Fixing and selling is a money losing deal even starting at $200. Parting it out might generate $5/hr minus medical expenses.

OTOH if a fire has been started in your heart, and you want more than anything to see this world class car back on the road, jump in, plenty of help and advice here.
