Excellent! The dent must have been caused be a previous clutch removal/replacement? The workshop manual has a specific comment to mind the sensor during the procedure.

When you say it had a dent in it, did the dent look square or round?

The dent was almost an L shape with quite a sharp corner to it as if it had been partially hit by something square?

In the middle right?

That is normal for a CPS that is falling or has failed, any time I can make out the marks I replace them.

Strangely enough not long after I bought the car it went back under warranty as it became difficult to select the gears. Although the cltuch had been replaced in fairly recent times the spigot bearing (if that's the right name?) that supports the input shaft, which had apparently doesn't come with a new clutch, had collapsed and they had to remove the clutch to replace it. Perhaps this is when the damage occured and it's been slowly deteriorating since then. I don't know where else the damage would have come from. I don't know enough about these cars yet to know if this would have contributed to it's demise or not?
