Alternator fixed in the 5 Litre!
Well the beast is back on the road and charging the battery fully! I sent the alternator of to my friend who used to work in Porsche and can source cheap parts and I got it back yesterday. Got it fitted this morning and took her for a drive; no spluttering or battery light going on! Works perfect
So if my 944 is dead I still have my other Porsche!

When I had the '88, I removed the alternator and had it checked. The technician says, "oh yes, it's charging, but the brushes are kinda worn. I'm sure they're the original brushes, but they'll be good for another 6 months or so." I thought he was just messing with me, but then realized he was serious. I told him to go ahead and replace them because I wasn't putting the alternator back in only to have to pull it back out in 6 months. I still have no idea what in the world he was smoking that day!

brushes are a wear item like a timing belt usually they can be replaced with another set and soldering the new parts into the regulator then your GTG for another 8 years

Nice! Though I fear the bearings might go before the brushes! As my friend said the pulley bearing was a bit worn. When it goes I'll just change the whole Alternator for a reconditioned one. But I'll get every last ounce of power out of that old one first!

When my 85 had about 90k, the bearing started to squeal. Local alternator shop rebuilt, new bearings and brushes for $115. Last month, 185k on it, alt stopped charging, brushes were worn. They tested the output and said there was "leakage", replaced diode pack, like new now, $100 this time, works perfect.
