Default How do you read the part numbers from the Porsche Part Numbers Catalogue?

I know this is going to sound absolutely mind numbingly stupid, but I can't seem to work out the correlation between a Porsche part number and the Part numbers in the Porsche Part Numbers Catalogue.

For instance.........

The ISV = 928.606.161.00

The Catalogue labels the ISV as 2. with the number 1/07/00 at the top of the page and 928.11 3-87 at the bottom of the page.

The 1/07/00 seems like some page and section number in increments of 5, probably to allow insertion of extra pages.

The 3-87 I think refers to the model age

This makes no sense to me, am I really that dim or does the parts catalogue not actually give you the part numbers you need?!

The catalogue looks identical to my workshop manuals.
Also if you buy a fuel pump would you expect to get the seals that go either side of the banjo connection included?

Many thanks for you help.

The part numbers are the four triplets or three triplets and a couplet, usually starting with "928". What version of the PET are you using? The latest is PET 7 iirc and is entirely electronic (Windows only, so I think us Linux users have to stick to older versions). From what I hear, the latest version allows you to enter a VIN and get all the specific parts numbers for that vehicle. Get the latest version you can support to make sure you have all the revisions and latest part numbers.

The ISV part number is 928.606.161.00 for 85-86 models. The 87-95 part ends in "01" instead of "00"

GO to this page on the Porsche website, and choose 928 and your model year.

Sounds like you're trying to use a very very old scan of the catalogue, rather than the newer versions with good diagrams

You can save the PDF locally after it opens for easier reference.

It's not a scan, I own the original. It comes in the same type of folder as the workshop manuals (which I also own).

The manual is a Parts number manual which contains exploded views of all the parts but as I said previously does not contain any numbers in the form xxx.yyy.zzz.ww.

Very odd.

They don't have that info at all. Back then part numbers were on microfilm and paper versions of parts cataloque were just for easier readability for parts people who had trouble seeing pics on microfilm reader.

Had another look at the spine and it actually says Porsche 928 Parts Picture Catalogue or something similar (I'm currently at work).

That might just explain it. Dumbass.
