Taking a step back for a minute and reading/researching other posts, I'm wondering if I have a failing ignition switch issue. As I said previously, this issue sort of gradually got worse. I can't see why anything behind the CE panel would just 'fail' (not that stranger things have happened) but it is just a bunch of wires. I did pull the ce and nothing looked 'out of place'.

Also, very conveniently <insert sigh>, something is now 'wrong' with the starter. To me, it sounds like when you turn the key it keeps the starter engaged too long making a terrible 'banging metal' sound. Almost like accidentally turning your key over again after the car is started. This scenario also went from happened one or twice to everytime.

I have read where failing ignition switches can cause alot of weird gremlins.

I have traced the exciter switch circuit so many times and nothing makes senses however a failing ignition switch could be the impetous of what is seemingnly an enigma.

Thoughts??

This issue is on hold until I get the starter rebuilt. I am hoping that is the root source of the electrical gremlin. I'll keep ya posted...

how old is the starter switch?
if its been there since before you got the car i would also replace it along with the starter you could do one at a time....

though having the starter turning with the key off isnt good for the starter

the pigtail plug that goes into the alternator went bad
That's interesting. Did you just pick up a pigtail at the local autoparts store? I have a hard time imaging the one I used going bad (seemed quite solid when I installed it), but I suppose its possible.

Good news that you found the problem.

Thanks!

The red wire inside the pigtail for whatever reason separated/pull apart from the pin enough to produce no results. By taking apart the pigtail, inserting the red wire back into the pin and soldering it on for good measure, it should be resolved!

Brad, thanks for posting the follow up!

And I REALLY like the way you update the first post with the outcome.

Chuck,

I bench tested by Delco and it's pushing out 110 amps at 14.2V. That being said, I had the defrost on full, the electric fans running, windshield wipers, parking lights and the stereo pumping and it was around 12.4v at idle (~875 +-50Rpms for me). (I have a digital meter reading the alternator all the time). I know that's not enough to charge per say, but it was almost fully loaded too. overall I'm very happy and it does what I need it to do...

Brad,
That's great!!
There is no way my stock alternator could keep up with that kind of load at idle.
