Mrmerlin,

I know I will disapoint you Not questioning your instructions - rather me doing something wrong. So I go to the back of the car and open the hatch. To remove rear carpet, I remove tool kit panel and then carpet itself. Then on the right side I have a mat (liner?) It's not hold to the car with any screws at all. Once I move mat/liner aside, I'm facing red frame of the car, right above the fuel tank. I do not see anything attached to the frame with screws... What is a "cargo hold down"? Did I miss it or rather - is my car missing something?

If you were to buy that meter, then follow Stan's instructions, and have the 87 wiring diagrams in you hand at the same time studying the circuit, you could actually establish a really good foothold. If it takes 40 hours to really understand it, its still worth it.

Based on the questions asked, it would be a great start.

Alternatively, sell fast, sell now.

I say this because I was in your shoes three years ago. No voltmeter. No diagrams. And a car that lightening must have struck.

They constantly need a little attention. Stan will help, its great, listen to him as I did.

Landseer - I've read forums prior to buying the car so I knew what to expect and I know there is a lot for me to learn... Part of owing these cars is it seems attending to these problems...

what you want to do is get behind the right rear quarter panel liner just where its covered by the end of the tool tray,
The tool tray actually locks into the rear side of the cargo hold down so if this little bracket is missing then your tool tray will not be anchored to the floor there is one anchor on each side of the tool tray it is held to the floor with 2 phillips screws.
the quarter panel liner is the panel that covers the rear wheel arch, there should be about 3 or 4 screws that anchor it to the floor of the hatch and the rear edge just under the tool tray, once the rear screws are removed then pry the rear edge of the liner outwards and with a light look behind the panel and on the floor of the hatch you will see a bunch of brown wires bolted to the floor this is a ground point

Default Light switch on Dash

This is gonna sound odd...but here goes.
I have experienced this exact issue on 3 S4 and later models where the park lights on one side do not come on.

The answer is a crunchy light switch on the dash. Just like an old radio volume **** that gets scratchy... I usually turn the light switch back and forth several times kinda aggressively and then check again.

The ultimate answer is to replace the light switch, but I was always able to work it some and then they all would light up after a bunch of tries.

If I had not gone thru this on 2 1988 S4's and a 91 GT, I would not be convinced that there is an issue with a 20 year old light switch.

You do not have to flip the switch all the way to headlights up, just back and forth tween off and parking lights..

Good Luck with it.
