Default 87 5spd- Horn Question- Updated

Well, I went to get my tags, title, and registration today. All went well. I also came up with a name (I cleared it with Jim and Perl) Since we have the same year and are doing much of the same R/R. I named it "The Black Pearl" one day it will get a Black respray with some type of Pearl mixed in.
Next is an inspection.
One problem, no horn. Looked up the posts on the horn not working.
Some mention one wire. Mine has two wires and two tangs. Its a 930 steering wheel. Neither was hooked up. So I tried various combinations without any luck.
Removed the metal hub and there were two metal rings and a spring area . No electronics as I have seen in one of the horn threads. Fuse looked OK.
Metal rings seemed as though the were making contact before removal.
Would post some pics but I didn't have a camera I could use.

Thanks

Charles

Hard to say.
Voltmeter would help.
Fuse is 18 as you know, and its a 15amp
Horn also has a relay, its XII on your panel.

with the 930 wheel you must reset the turn signal switch to the correct height otherwise the brass tang will shear off, this is the most likely problem
There are 2 wires in the steering wheel hub one connects the ground to the wheel hub the other connects the wheel hub to the horn button both of the these must also be connected

When you say horn button. Do you mean horn Pad? Both tangs are present nothing was sheared.

Thanks

the tang is under the hub and its connected to the turn signal switch moving the switch housing can be done by loosening the 8mm bolt on the TS switch
Horn button or pad
]IIRC the horn ring is isolated from the wheel and needs the second wire to continue the ground track

There is that wire for that isolate ring, but I don't think there is a another wire.
I think is is just metal "structure which makes contact with the copper wiper on the stalk.
None-the-less, the wiper is probably boogered up, as they often are.

Jim there are 2 wires on a 930 wheel one is from the base plate to the horn ring base,
the other is from the brass ring to the horn pad mount. On these pictures the loose wire would connect to the male pin just under the silver screw on the face of the wheel then the horn pad is pressed onto the horn ring ,
No wire connects to the horn pad, it just snaps onto the horn ring

Here is what I found when I took the wheel off. I assume this could be a cause that the horn doesn't blow. Seems like excessive wear. Any suggestions on how to prevent this in the future?

Thanks

Charles

remove the lower section of the column cover then loosen the TS switch bolt and move the TS switch away from the wheel base.
Adjust the TSS so the metal tab is just touching the bottom of the wheel,
you can look up to effect the correct position
You may be able to solder a small piece of brass onto the worn section

Just the horn contact on its plastic bracket is part no. 964 652 104 00

Taken from a post by Mark Anderson found here:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...tact-part.html

I bought one - haven't fitted it yet, but my contact is in much worse shape than Charles' (my 89 has been off the road for a few months with other work on it, hence I haven't got around to fitting this piece yet). I bought it for my '89.. looks to be the same as the one on the switch cluster. It has a leg sticking out the rear which inserts into the switch cluster.

edit: An older post by Mark implies it may not fit 88 and earlier model years directly? Not sure - his posts were a few years apart... but you should at least be able to rivet on the new strip if it comes to it. Older post found here: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...act-parts.html

Hey Charley,
That is the part I was talking about when you were here. On my 83, I just bent it up about 1/4" until it would make constant contact with the bototm ring on the steering wheel. I think that will solve your problem. Remember you are talking about a 20+ year old car here. If it stops working, just bend it back again. I think mine was just as worn but I never had another issue with it. Hey, took mine on a 400 mile trip yesterday... Still runs like **** but drove well and I enjoied it.

Best of luck on that wheel,
