Transmission input bearing
During my removal of the 5-speed transmission (86.5) I was going to replace all seals, and was wondering if the input shaft bearing can be replaced at the same time the seals are done? Or does that entail a full teardown of the transmission?
Anyone hints would be greatly appreciated. As part of the refurbish I am getting rid of my Eibach springs in favor of some Hypercoils, so if anyone wants a low mileage set, let me know.
Cheers!

If the input bearing, which is one of the strongest part in 928 manual, needs to be changed due to wear this simply means that all the internals are already completely worn out. If you cannot determine the wear in the gearbox (this means tearing the thing apart) it is totally pointless to try and replace the input bearing, not to mention you'll have to strip down the gearbox to do this. Replace the seals and drive happy.

This is pure speculation, but I think bad or shifted bearings in the torque tube can wreck the input bearing to the transmission with little effect on the rest of the transmission.

Greg Brown went thru the tranny in my GTS and replaced the input bearing, 2 needle cage bearings, 3 of the synchros, and all the seals. Everything else was ok to his eye, so I'd say the input bearing can go before much of the rest of the tranny does.

Thanks...it was more of a preventative maintenance thought. Since I was planning on replacing all the seals I thought, what the heck, a 25 year old bearing could probably use replacement as well. Transmission shifts great and I have had no issues with it, so I guess I will leave it alone
I was more curious as to "IF" it can be done from the outside once the input shaft seal is out for replacement, or do I have to perform delicate internal surgery?
Cheers!

More like disembowel the trans to get access to the bearing......
