Lets get on the same page. Do you have an RMB (rear muffler bypass) installed now?

They look like this on the rear of the exhaust system:

Or do you have the stock S4 rear muffler still on the car? They look like this:

The RMB is usually the 1st step towards changing the car's sound. They also save you some weight, since the stock muffler is heavy.

I had an RMB, x-pipe w/o cats, and Flow Masters on my '87 S4 and it was loud, but I liked it.

Instead of busting up the cats, have a local muffler shop just cut them out and replace them with a section of pipe. That way you have them for future use or resale of the car. Then add the RMB and keep the stock resonators. That should give you some extra power and better sound. You also need to take off or cut off the air pump belt if you remove the cats.

Get the car to your local shop and straighten the exhaust out. Easy and not a lot of money. You could replace the cat w/ a high flo whatever or just gut it and tidy up the exhaust from there. It isn't hard, it all depends on how loud you like it. I like it loud! You could do your own rmb and if it is to loud you can add a high flo unit. I would replace the whole thing and call it a day! Then you know your exhaust is done and you can move on to bigger fish!

If you hollow that cat out, wear a dust mask. You don't want to inhale the ceramic support material, and it will generate a bunch of dust.

I have the stock muffler setup on my car. The air pump has already been removed awhile back I just took it off on my first TB job.

Thanks for the clarification I thought RMB had to do with the resonators for some reason.

If you are still running the stock cats, I would put the air pump back in service. I think the stock 2 stage cats need an air pump to stay within temperature specs.

I took my exhaust system out today and checked the cats. They are not the stock ones and had been replaced at some point. So I beat the ceramic out of them...thank god they were not metal matrix. Then put the system back in. The car is louder and sounds better and I swear it is a bit stronger on the top end.

Thanks for all the input guys I'm happy with how it all turned out!

You need also to be sure your car is performing as Porsche intended. MAF OK, no knock sensor faults, WOT switch working, etc. before you bother with the exhaust.

Cars without cats make my eyes water... I dont see how you guys can do it. I know its more $$ than just gutting the stockers, but u can get some high flow cats and still be 'Green' and have high performance.
