Clunking AC/heater fan motor
OK, at first I thought it was something to do with the compressor. Just a simple hunch on my part but figured out today that the blower fan for the AC/heater is making an odd "clunking" sound. Do I have to get to it with significant center console disassembly? Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Car is an '89 S4. 166,000 miles. It makes this noise only when the interior fan runs on high. I'm thinking the bearings are going out in the squirrel cage.
Of course, that's all "theory" and the facts may come out to be otherwise.
Any advice is welcome, thanks!

If the fan is making noise, then I suspect the motor is on its way out. A little WD-40 may buy you some time, but eventually, you'll need to replace it, or have it rebuilt (if possible.)

Yeah, I kind of figured it's headed for the big HVAC in the sky. I may be able to get to it, remove it and find a motor for it but...then....just replacing it is an option too.
Thanks, JH. I think it's about had it.

The blower motor is in the right rear corner of the engine compartment. You do have to get to one fastener from inside the car...
