Central warning light (!)

The CD set can be acquired from 928srus, in Seans signature.
The reason I like it is the ancilliary documentation, which is richer in some respects than the WSM.
Within the 928 electrical training docs, for instance, is a bit of a breakdown on the hierarchy of workings of the central warning unit.
It would be a major overall help to you, in my opinion, and is inexpensive. It contains each year's update to the Porsche mechanics, telling them what has changed for each new year. For 1985, that is a 120 pages long, for instance.
For this issue, I'm with Sean.
One way to cross check is to disconnect the warning light from the central cover. Start the car and wait about 2 or 3 minutes. The warning light for timing belt should come on in that time. That method checks simply to see that the circuit is working properly. Then, use the button to clear the warning exclamation point. The little dash light for the timing belt should still burn, though. Worth checking. Even though you did a light test already.

Agreed, as Ed says, you could pull the plug on the belt warning system, just behind the dip stick. It plugs in to the cover. It should come on in 3 minutes after the car is started. Quick driveway check.
Dang, go drive the car and enjoy it

Burning Brakes
I just went to Seatte and picked my 928 up. This has a similar problem. All warning light are lit with the ignition on. The parking break lamp stays on after the brake is released until I tap the breaks. The Central warning light stays on until I reset it. Driven over 3000 miles. The belt tensioner light also came on a couple of times after about 2,500 miles in 3 days. Then went away the next morning. I had a Porsche mechanic look at it and he tightened the belt some. Never say the tensioner light again, but the Central light comes on every time I start the car.
Now that I have mentioned it, the car will probably seize up and or catch fire.
I would drive it, but as you can tell I'm insane

I believe there was a thread once about a fault in the charging system and in particular the alternator causing the "!" to light with no other warning lights. Can't remember specifics and the search on this site still sucks.....
