Default looking for a good used transmission for a 84

does anyone have any idea where I could pick up a good used auto transmission for a 1984s ??? I have found them at a couple of on-line sites (german auto dismatlers) but they are asking $1500+ for transmission, I could have my current tranny rebuilt for that price. One would think a used transmission would be somewhat cheaper than that ?? thanks everyone, my car has been sitting for about two months and I am going crazy !!!

The 85 and 86 will be a perfect fit.

The 87-on S4 transmission can also fit, but some tweaks need to be made.

Where are you located? Shipping costs for an auto is not cheap.

If you are replacing the transmission with a used one, before installing it I would suggest;
Replace the torque converter bearings.
Replace the front pump seals.
Replace the the filter and pan gasket.
Replace the rear flexplate rivets with bolts.
Check the kickdown solenoid functionality.

When I replaced my transmission (84S), these items were recommended to me by several people (including transmission experts).
It will cost more; however, it will make your used transmission experience much more enjoyable

What is the flexplate rivet upgrade about? Is there play or clunking back there?

From what transmission guys have said, over time the rear flexplate rivets loosen and cause play.
This is corrected by replacing the rivets with bolts.
I am not sure if there is a technical bulletin on this or not.

Cheers,

There is a technical bulletin on this. It has been discussed here many times. i think Bill Ball even scanned it in and posted it once.
