Good move Lucio a used engine is a cheaper option than a replacement block - did you buy it in the 928international half-price sale?

Post pictures of your shark when you get a chance

Default The shark bit again!

Dear Friends, some news from Italy,
Stormy frozen snow & cold wheather, but I see finally the car running again,
We still need trim some electrical failure, but basically everything looks good
( Sorry for my English ), I believe is 1988 engine, or late 1987,
Yes it was from 928 international. 1,700 USD, 800USD delivery to Italy...
and 700 € ( EURO! ) custom tax, but still half price of the Italian engine that I have see ( and better condition )...do You understand something from the picture?
I believe is just a production Year...

See You Soon

( Now I will rebuild a spare engine with the old one..........)

why would replacing the 928 engine with a Chevy engine be a sin?

The LS1 weighs less, makes more power, is more reliable, and parts and maintenance are infinitely cheaper.

Dear Cretinix I agree with you about : "makes more power, is more reliable, and parts and maintenance are infinitely cheaper"..and not last I'm able to work on a Chewy, the Porsche engine is a nightmare,
but in Italy none have experience about this change, and the car value go to zero...

The 24 87 stamp likely means week 24 of 1987 (early may?) - which likely makes the used engine one from an '88 S4? This is however just a guess of mine based on typical manufacturer stampings on other non-928 items I've seen.

The more useful information is on the M28xx stamping up on top of the block, by the water pipe that goes to the top of the radiator. Something like "M28 42 81Jxxxxxx" or whatever it says.

That will tell you more about what year engine it is and what model it came off (auto/manual S4/GT etc.)

And you think there are many LS1s in Italy?

It is a beautiful high-dollar banjo, but it just doesn't belong at the symphony.

Glad you found another engine for your car. Maybe you can make some money from what is left of your old engine. There should be many good parts left on it like the heads, and the crank may still be good.
