Default Timing belt brain fart

Well here is the story. I took my car apart to fix a oil leak that was coming from my oil pump, I was not thinking at all when I took off the timing belt off nor did I think about it when I put it back on. I have no idea where the crank was when I put it back together. The light came on in my head when the car didn't start and it sounded like it wasn't going top fire.

I pulled everything back apart to find out the cam gears don't line up at TDC or 45deg.

Just in case I didn't for some strange reason trash my motor I wonder if anyone had any ideas how I would start to get back on track.

Since the belt is not lined up should I take it apart and reassemble from the 45 deg. mark or TDC?

Then should I just move the cam gears back by turning the nuts on the gears?

All help appreciated.

With the S4 and later you would put the crank at 45, take the belt off, then turn the cams to the marks, then turn the crank back to 0.

What year model is yours and how far off is it?

I don't think it was a brain fart, I think your brain took a dump, and a big one.

There are some guys on here that can tell you how to fix your mess, but I would have to review a lot of their previous posts to figure it all out.

Good Luck!!!!

A year model would really help, and if it is a early car is it a Euro or not.

BTW, you might want to close this thread or the other one just like it.

Wow / is this a 86 32v motor? And after all the work you tried to start it? Well, if its a 32V motor its possible to bend valves if the timing (cam) is off far enough.

It's surprising you would attempt to repair an Oil pump issue without researching how to do it first, but yea, you need to provide all the information you can if you want a accurate assessment of what could be the issue.

Are you 100% sure the valves are bent? Bent valves don;t mean the engine is toast.....far from it.

I jsut did the today on my '85..... At the 45 degree mark, the cams whoud be around 2.5 teeth passed the timing mark. I set mine to 3.5 passed it and they were both 1 tooth too far, so I re adjusted it.

One other thing to check is that the balancer is NOT on backwards. The numbers on it shoud NOT be upside down when you are stnading infront of the car......When the balancer is on correctly and you are standing infront of the car, looking at the engine, the 45 mark will be to the right of the OT.

I hope you are not giving up, Matt. If you give up you will never get over it. If you take the bull by the horns, whatever that amounts to now with you engine, you will always feel good about whatever you accomplish. If the valves are bent then all you need is some straight valves. There are a bunch of guys on here that will help you through a valve job. You have already shown a lot of initiative in trying to do the belt yourself. With help you will be able to accomplish a lot. Stick with it and see this issue through.

I agree, stick with it, I know it all looks like crap right now, but go have a really good night of drinking and it may look better next week.

I have a extra set of head gaskets for a S4 I can donate, not sure if they will work on yours or not, but you are welcome to them.

Matt-

We haven't heard from you in ages. I'm sure we can get it back together - running. It's not trashed. Let's just slow down a little and fingure it out. We can get it lined back up and check compression. You might get lucky - you never know.

The annual Hell gathering is this weekend. WOuld love to see you if you can make it. It's been too long.

Thank you Greg I know I need to stick with it but the next time I'll know not to mix cocktails and work on my car at the same time
I appreciate the offer on the head gasket, it's not about the money as much as it is about the time away from my daughter.

Regards
Matt
