Default Alternator wiring

I am going to put a Delco CS130 alternator on my 85- I know a lot of guys have done this on early cars, but I can't find any ref to a later conversion....can anyone tell me what the wires on the car connect to on the Delco pigtail? Does my car have the same green wire that early cars have? Does it connect to the middle wire of the three small wires in the Delco pigtail? I read all the info on Sharkskin's page, including how an alternator functions, but still am not clear on which wire to connect.....

the small black wire is not used on the delco pig tale, the Red wire goes to the terminal on the battery, and the other wire goes to the "exciter" wire from the harness

Ducman, thanks, but- This pigtail has 3 small brown wires, plus the bigger red one that goes to the B+ terminal- which of the 3 small wires connects to the car? Center, left, or right?

I would post some pictures , this sounds like you need to be sure of whats going on.
generally speaking the thick wire goes to the hot post and then there will be a small one for the exciter circuit its blue,
the trick is to find out the wire diagram for the new alternator

only 1 of the wires needs to be used.

Hook it up to the car, and leave bare ends. Start the car and have someone watch a volt meter.

When you touch the exciter wire to the right lead the voltage will go up and the car will be charging.

You can also change out the regulator in most Delco's to convert them to a single wire, not sure if that would be a good thing or a bad thing in a 928.

I had my stock one rewound for more amperage.

Terminal L goes to the exciter wire.

Converting to or buying a single-wire alternator would make installation a lot easier. But... You lose the indicator light function, the lamp that lights when the alternator is not charging. With the uber-reliable voltmeter there in the dash already it might not be a huge loss, but folks should be aware.

Thanks all for the responses! Alan- that was the exact piece of info I was looking for- "L" is the center wire of the three small wires in the pigtail, so that is just what I needed. I didn't know if the wiring in my 85 was the same as the earlier cars. Sound like it is....

This alt came with the two mount ears about 180 deg from each other, and I ordered a front case half with the ears about 120 deg apart, so it looks more like the stock placement. It also has a much bigger front bearing. I will take some pics when it goes in and document what I'm doing, in case somebody else with a later car want to do this conversion.

The basics of alternator wiring are conceptually the same on all model years and are almost unchanged in implementation also. The alternators themselves were upgrade over time but thats about all that changed. The very earliest cars just have a charge bulb withoiut a parallel resistor thats themain difference.
