old to new motor mount styles
on my 81 i have the solid rubber mounts with the little shocks (that dont work). If I was to switch to the new style "ford, volvo" mounts, do i need new mounting plates etc??

you need to replace the crossmember with a part from a later car IIRC its 83 to 87 should work

Just a FYI, don't know if it's posted somewhere (though it probably is...)-
I installed the solid mounts when I swapped the euro engine. After about 100 miles, the mounts squatted down AT LEAST 1/2 inch... and so the exhaust downtubes then contacted the crossmember, resulting in a horrible metal-to metal nasty vibration and noise.
Moral to the story? Allow PLENTY of clearance.
Hope to meet you someday, Ducman. You're about the closest 928'er to me down here in this f*cking wasteland!

Eric if your MMs are squatting down then you need to replace them especially if the manifolds are hitting the side braces.
You may have a gotten a bad set of mounts

I'm gonna try and get over to the 3rd Coast GTG this November... my schedule looks to be super busy then though.
I'm down in El Paso. There is absolutely no reason to include this area in your trip to Texas! But I have heard that Eastern TX is nice.

You may not need to change the cross member. The holes in the cross member to take the MM's may be there already. Have a look and see. No reason why you can't drill the holes in the cross member as long as you have some accurate dimensions to mark the centers.
