Waiting on 19# injectors in the mail for my 88.
Pulled the old injectors out and the pintle cap on 4 of them fell down into the heads. Did read that some leave them and they will get chewed up and spit out. Not hip on taking a chance with that, so I removed the intake and used the shop vac to suck them out.
When I install the new ones, can the plastic pintle cap be left off? Sounds as if it is there to protect? Not sure what exactly as the spray tip housing is all metal. Only concern is plugging the end of the injector during the install.

I would make sure they are on there use them after dipping them into hot water this will assist in seating them on the injectors .
If your getting the 4 hole versions you would want the pintle caps on as they will hold the 4 hole spray cover in place and keep it from falling into the cylinder I think that 4 hole portion is stainless steel and though its spot welded into place there is always a possibility of it coming off

Make sure that the caps are on and the heat solution couldn't hurt for a little insurance.

What is their purpose exactly? I dont plan to have to remove them anytime soon, but is a pita when they come off the end. The orings on a few stayed in the intake... just pushed them out by hand once the intake was on the bench.
