I was an early adopter (one of the first commercially available I think) but am now on a standard Laso pump. I'll let Ed fill in the detail as he got both units back for post-mortem.

Thanks Polecat & Mike. I want to do the upgrade but I keep reading conflicting reports such as these.
My Laso is now 5 years old and needs changing. Would be interesting to hear from Ed or even Roger who sells them

I just had a brief email exchange with Ed. He's in the midst of large-scale build-out activities at his business and will respond when he is able to respond thoughtfully. That'll be several days from now.

The executive summary is that after the few earlier failures he made some changes in the supply chain that feeds the finished product and is not aware of any failures after that. He'll have to provide the details.

That is really good news Dave. Thanks for the input. I will anxiously wait for Ed's response.

Last year when I received my water pump from Ed, he stated:" that he ran the pump for 2 hours at 6000 rpm." before he sent it to me. It's in my signature, every thing was replaced along with the pump. Also a new Behr radiator, followed Stan's advice, and refilled with G-05 coolant, distilled water, and a bottle of water wetter.

I'll be back home this weekend, and will drive the car to LA on business. It'll be the first time since I parked it last November. I don't beat it, but I'm not afraid to put my foot in it ether. I had her past the century mark for prolonged periods running on I 10 last year. I'm very happy with the pump, and I recommend buying one.

I have an Engine Guardian on my '89S4 - going on 12,000 kilometres now.

For me the improvements are threefold:-
1) a seized pump won't break the timing belt, and
2) the standard (small) bearing cassette on the pump drive shaft, which also performs the shaft sealing duties, doesn't carry the timing belt lateral loads, and
3) the impeller is pinned and won't migrate into the block.

Even without the shearable link, I see the other improvements as well worth the little extra.

If I WERE to have problems with the shearable link, I can see myself replacing the polymer with a suitably shaped piece of alloy.

Thanks Steve & Polecat. I'm sold on it. Question, did you purchase additional spare links? Just asking

I didn't buy spares. I probably should have.

IIRC, Ed has an alloy coupler available, as well as spare polymer ones.

I believe Ed gets $ 450.00 and ya need to send your rebuildable core back to him.

I didn't purchase any spare couplers ether. I know mine was less than 5 bills, but even if it was twice as much it's still worth the money.
