Default Shifting problem

Talked with Roger Tyson about this, but wanted to get the expertise from the board as well...

Yesterday, while stopped at a light, I had the shifter in neutral and pushed it into second gear. Except it didn't go into second gear. The shifter **** traveled forward way past the proper throw distance and the car did not engage in gear. Same was true for every other gear. However, once I put the shifter into reverse, it went into gear and subsequent tries into forward gears worked as well.

Suggestions?

Thanks and Peace,
Tim

check the clamping bolt at the rear shift linkage above the trans als see if the front shifter ball cup is in fact tight on the ball. Might be time to upgrade to the new shifter Rogers selling

Thanks Mr M. I've gone ahead and ordered the shifter ball cup and a couple replacement plastic and rubber parts for both the front and back linkage areas. Hoping this won't be too time consuming to do.

Grateful for your time and expertise.

Peace.

Or you could put in one of my shifters and ditch that silly ball cup!

Hi Tim,

I just bought a 79 5 speed... unloaded it from the flatbed, took it around the block and lost all gears except reverse. Sounds like we may have similar problems, what exactly did you order to fix this?

Thanks
Stuart

Stuart:

Give Roger Tyson a call at 928sRUs (817-430-2688) and he can give you the short list of parts.

Peace.

I think Stan hit it on the head, as usual. I am betting the bolt on the rear clamp has backed out.

I'm surprised Roger didn't try to talk you into converting it to a "Roger Box"

I asked Roger what a "Roger box" was, being a total noob...... that was priceless.

Okay, so Roger sent parts for the front and back ball cup assemblies. I'd like to know just what has to be removed underneath the car so as to get to the front shifter ball cup. The heat shield seems for certain, but I'm wondering if the exhaust has to come down as well. Looks like that sucka might be in there a ways.

Thanks and Peace,
Tim

I have some forward/backward slop in the shifter as well and can't seem to access the clamp which seems to be my problem (everything under the shift lever seems solid). Can you actually get to it by pushing the rubber boot back (toward the rear of the car)?
Sorry -- don't mean to steal your thread!
Thanks.

Should be able to do it without removing the exhaust. It's not easy, but it can be done. Heat shields definitely have to come out though. There's a little more room if you come at it from the DS. There's also a flat on the shift shaft that you can use to counter hold it with a wrench, maybe 19mm?

Yes, but it's easier if you remove the heat shield. You can get the heat shield out without removing the exhaust, then carefully slide the rubber boot back.

Then when you're done you can order a new boot because if you didn't tear the old one pulling it off, you will when you put it back on.

Thanks, Mike. Your suggested procedure is what my mechanic is going to try, as further specified by Roger. Hope to have the OB back tomorrow.
