1. Yes.. user Andre Hedrick has an 88 S4 transmission in his early car (maybe an '81 too?) His may be an auto from memory.

2. You can also swap in an LSD (from another auto or manual of the same pre/post '85 type)

I'm doing it at the moment. You will need a crazy strong 2-jaw bearing puller to do the swap (diff bearings are a f*&^%r to remove), and be comfortable following the workshop manual to measure and re-shim for bearing preload and backlash.

Its actually not that hard.. if you do your own intake refresh and TBWP then this shouldn't hold much fear - I'll be doing a write-up when the car's back on the road.. got many pics so far.
