Keeping them alive.

Stand up and be counted!

Good place to give a quick summary of one that you saved. Or a save in progress!

Not sure I have saved it but we are defintely treading water!

I bought my 1979 928 5 spd showing 160K miles a couple of months ago. PO had taken car, spare engine on a pallet and extra set of man hole cover wheels in trade against a business debt. Car ran until the clutch line blew and then he decided to get it out of his driveway.

Only time will tell but it has been fun so far!

The ad said "Low miles, one owner - belonged to a smoker"

How was I supposed to know?

I saved a 82 w/ comp pkg. It was headed for a parts car.
Not going to keep it original. It is kind of a Hinz 57.
87 front end
993 brakes
Jim M's old wheels
83 Euro Motor
Aero Mirrors
Eibachs
Black interior w/ red stiching
and more to come as I get my allowance

Well, it's not 'saved' yet, but I have a '79 in the garage that I'm (finally) getting back to. I'm the third or fourth owner and the (non-functioning) odometer shows something over 240,000 miles. At some point a previous owner started to set it up for the track, but never finished. I'm not sure who put that ugly-*** wing on there; it's gone now, but the poorly-drilled holes remain (including the 'extra' 4 drilled in what turned out to be a poor location). The car is white, but it has a half-assed 'pearlescent' coating applied that looks like hell, but it needs a repaint anyway.

I tend to name my cars, and this one is 'Moby'...

I bought the car in '06 from a friend of my brother and I drove it here and there without putting too much mileage on it. It got a semi-serious workout when my son needed a car for a couple months on an emergency basis for college. Moby motored very happily back and added a couple thousand miles to the clock before we bought him another car. After that I took a year-long vacation in Afghanistan on Uncle Sugar's dime and on return I picked up a cherry '87 944 Turbo. So, Moby has been languishing in a corner of my garage.

This past spring, my wife and I went to the Porsche swap meet in Hershey and she *almost* bought a bright blue 928 from Ohio that was sitting on the sale lot. If it had been there an hour later the second time we walked through that area, she would have called her credit union and driven it home. I reminded her that I already had a 928 and that it needed work, and I promised her that Moby would go to the swap meet next year, either under his own power or on a trailer with a 'for sale' sign in the window.

The two biggest issues right now that are keeping it off the road are the electricals - which are squirrelly as hell - and the exhaust - which is rotted. I'm sourcing an exahust right now, but the electricals are another story. I'm semi-handy and I can usually get the job done, but electricals confuse the hell out of me. I've found a local guy who specializes in foreign cars and as soon as I get the exhaust on Moby is going to him to get the electricals sorted.

A couple of pics...

The interior is a mix of good and bad. The seats are black vinyl, and they and the carpets look great. The dash and binacle are cracked and the door skins and rear quarter skins are shot (a previous owner hacked huge holes to put in aftermarket speakers). I think I can fix the rears with fiberglass, I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the door skins yet. I'm keeping my eyes on Craigslist for donors, since the sellers on eBay are all to aware of what they can get for 928 parts!

After looking at other cars and such, I've decided that I like the super-clean early look, so Moby is a keeper. I think I might have him repainted to a champagne color; the white seems a little bland.

Anyway, thanks for looking!

Mine was an eBay special:
'85 5 speed
203k miles? (and broken odo), runs (got it for under $3k)
interior had broken glass near the ebrake from when it was broken into
Stereo was missing (and removed with a dull rock from what I can tell)
Seats torn, carpets trashed, back pax seat was soggy from water leak in hatch
Shifting was typical 'stirring porridge' you get from worn/destroyed bushings everywhere.
it leaked just about every fluid
rear bumper shocks were pushed in so the bumper cover had a pronounced 'pucker'
beat up stock manhole cover wheels
brake rotors were worn below spec, wear sensors were jumped out
timing belt warning system was grounded and disabled
couldn't pass emissions test
...basically it was about a coin flip away from being a parts car

*******What I've done so far (I don't know if it will ever be 'done')***
new carpet, new leather seat upholstery (Thanks Rob Budd)
New bushings throughout the shift linkages (thanks 928 intl.)
New brakes, clutch, intake refurb, mm/pg, timing belt and tensioner rebuild (thanks 928sRus et al)
'Snorkel intake' filter system (thanks Tony and Kuhn Performance)
Refurbed some donor phone dials (thanks Darkside and BodyMotion)
New Goodyear Eagle F1 tires for the back (Thanks John Cho) better used ones for the front (Thanks Darkside)
s300s chips/custom timing setup (thanks Porken)
rear seat delete
New stereo/800w amp and 12" subwoofer (thanks wifey )

I still have a long list of things that I need/want to do but right now I can get in it anytime I like, go anywhere I need to be and love every minute of the trip. Stock hp was 288 at the crank in 1985, last year I dynoed 292 at the wheels and that was before the Porken chips.

If it weren't for Rennlist there's NO WAY I could have done half of this stuff. Thanks folks.

I've bought my two off Ebay. The first one, 80, was such a basket case I abandoned it and went on with the 84S. The 80 was hit by a fork lift in Long Island and the 84 hit a Camry in WI.

For the 84 I straightened the front end, replaced some sheetmetal, replaced the entire braking system, put on S4 calipers, 996tt wheels, new carpets and seats, new satellite radio and MB Quart speakers, headers, 3" full exhaust, and some Euro heads/cams.

I guess you could say I saved mine. It was on a perilous downward spiral, rotting away from neglect and stupidity.

It's slowly waking up, and has been a joy to work on, save for the rear speaker replacements.

Mine was a CL save. 1986 original red 5 speed with 86000miles. Paint was horrid, deferred maintenance was obvious ( his quote was the timing belt had been changed and he pointed to the alternator belt), 20 something kid wanted to use it as a drift car. Had original suspension that was shot but made it easy to break loose the tail. Brakes were history and I think the fluid was original. Plus other isues to numerous to mention. Delightfully no electrical demons...yet.

I took it for a PPI and found out that the kid had brought it in to the same place to get an idea of what needed doing and was shocked at the $13,000 quote.

Owning my own wrenches saved tons as well as tapping into this group. 23 months later and I've gotten past the problems and am now working on improvements.

I have a set of S4 brakes to instal, a dual exhaust in the works, sunroof cables to install, new red wrinkle finish pipe organ intakes parts to install...( add never ending list suggestions here)

Thanks to all suppliers I've used and listers for parts and help over time. You all made this save possible.

Today, I parked next to a red mid 80's 930 and both cars looked great in the morning sunlight. I hate to think what the combined cost new was.

Tim

I think the code for that is POS 001.

Love these threads; you guys have a lot more patience than I do! Hopefully the cars I sacrificed will help get some of these back on the road.
